Durant put in what 10 years in OKC/Seattle? Golden State built that team through sound decision making and smart drafting, I dont get the complaints here. Their offense is a system that appeals to guys.

The owners want to make a player have to choose between money and flexibility.....

If I am a player what sense does that make to me......especially when we read stories about guys finding out they were traded by listening to the radio or finding out on their way to the arena and such

na Pat....fukk your franchise tage

This is actually a great solution from Riley. I rather have a healthy league with parity than a league with only 2-3 great teams. If teams were able to offer a significantly larger amount to keep their homegrown talent, it would eventually lead to a much healthy league. Obviously the player has a choice, they can sign with any Team they want but would be turning down an extra 10-20 millions.

To expand on this, there should be a big 3 option. Big one would turn down extra 15, big 2 would turn down extra 10, big 3 would lose out on extra 5 millions if they choose to leave their team. For example, Durant would be big 1, Westbrook would be big 2.

A Franchise tag would be horrible for the NBA and subvert free agency just like it does football

It wouldn't be the same as the NFL one. This suggestion would simply mean that teams can designate one player they can offer anything they like and his deal also wouldn't count against the cap. No mention of the concept of the new team owing the old team multiple draft picks like the NFL. This one would simply mean it could be WAY WAY WAY WAY more lucrative to stay in place. Theoretically under this system a team could offer someone the Alex Rodriguez contract and have it not count against the cap. If the guy wants to leave, he could still leave though.

It's not an NFL type tag in theory. It's choosing one player who they have no restrictions on the contract they can offer that player and that his deal wouldn't count against the cap. Nothing about if they sign with another team the other team loses multiple draft picks to the old team. That's what makes the NFL tag horseshyt.

the mls designated method would be the best way in my position
would still count as "max" on the cap but you can pay them in excess that wouldn't
  • For each Designated Player, $335,000 of his salary is charged to the salary cap and paid by the league ($167,500 for DP players joining during the MLS summer transfer window), with any remaining salary being paid by the team's owner.
so for example youd pay a dude like lebron 75mill ay ear but hed only count like 35mill against the cap

Based on what Riley said it's not a Franchise tag in the sense the player is locked from leaving the team. Just locked on getting a contract offer no other player on the team can get.

If the player doesn't like the franchise 'exemption' (better name for it), he could still leave.

I'd even add the layer to it, that if a player turns down a Franchise Exemption, they can't be eligible for it for the duration of their career.

If it's not about the money to stay with one team, it shouldn't be about the money no matter where he plays.
