What happens when you get a situation like OKC drafting multiple stars? If they only get one slot, it'd be pretty much a lock that they lose one for them
Not necessarily. There wouldn't be a financial advantage to leaving their current team since the current one would still have their bird rights. They simply wouldn't be designated the franchise player. Ultimately it is always up to the player to choose.

How so? If a team gets one franchise slot where they can pay a player what they want and the Thunder used it on Durant, why wouldn't Westbrook leave for other teams that would make him their guy?

Unless you're saying that teams could only franchise a player they drafted, which would be stupid because then it essentially screws over players like Westbrook, Harden, Aldridge, Wiggins

The theory is a team can apply it to one guy at a time on the team

Thats not what im talking about

If one teams best player is lebron and one teams best player is al horford, then neither count against the cap

Lebron+94 mil in cap room

Vs

Horford+94 mil in cap room

Thats terrible

True. I see your point.

But then it boils down to what can you do with the rest of the roster with that 94 million. :patrice: . Enticing the non franchise superstars will be key in that scenario. That's where eliminating the "max" and instituting a hard cap can come into play.

Let's say the Cavs franchise Bron for 40 million.

you got 94 left. Right now the Cavs are at 81.4 million excluding Bron. You got a little over 12 mill left for the rest of the roster. Only 9 cats are on the team right now. What do you do?

Ok so again, if we got a situation like the Thunder drafting Durant & Westbrook, if the Thunder make KD their franchise guy and give him a huge contract, wouldn't that pretty much incentivize Westbrook to leave for a team that will make him their franchise guy rather than stay and make less?

You could say the franchise tag counts as a max contract on the salary cap, but teams are still able to spend whatever they want on that player

So LeBron is getting 100m a year but it only counts as 30m against the cap

That's not a bad idea. :ehh:

If he wants that pay day, but it has to be a team with your bird rights or something like that who can offer that exemption

Kill the max salary too but retain bird rights. Then the onus is on the owners as far as how much they want to go into the luxury tax.... do you want to win or not owners..... :mjpls:

I'm in favor of getting rid of max contracts in general. But I don't see what this franchise exemption would accomplish

It doesn't fit becuase all the superstars thhat left didn't leave becuase of money they left becuase of seemingly better championship opportunities.

Even the golden boy wade left off GP. Money was a concerning factor but that deal in the chi wasn't much of a difference. He trying to save face because I'm sure he is getting a lot of hate for letting wade dip like that.

Instead of all of them leaving like what's going to happen when Westbrook leaves??!?

Y'all gotta think before you post
