So I-95 gets to be even more congested and nightmare to drive through?

So in your scenario, once Amtrak folds, then what? Tell the commuters, "oh well, you're SOL."
I believe if there’s a profit to made the market will make it...:yeshrug:
Elon is already building tunnels under cities:yeshrug:

If there isn’t enough consumer demand to cover operating cost it should fold in my opinion.

amtrak reform and accountability act of 1997 addresses all of that.
I just disagree with its existence in general.

in 1997 Congress authorized $5.2 billion for Amtrak over the next five years – largely to complete the Acela capital project – on the condition that Amtrak submit to the ultimatum of self-sufficiency by 2003 or liquidation.[150] While Amtrak made financial improvements during this period,[citation needed] it did not achieve self-sufficiency.[151]
:mjlol:

In 2010 the Senate approved a bill to provide $1.96 billion to Amtrak, but cut the approval for high-speed rail to a $1 billion appropriation.[151]
:francis: How progressive...

Because of the fragmentation of railroad unions by job, as of 2009 Amtrak has 14 separate unions to negotiate with. Plus, it has 24 separate contracts with those unions.[142] This makes it difficult to make substantial changes, in contrast to a situation where one union negotiates with one employer. Former Amtrak president Kummant followed a cooperative posture with Amtrak's trade unions, ruling out plans to privatize large parts of Amtrak's unionized workforce.[143]

@DEAD7 so you think the only value of public services is if it can turn a profit?

:hhh:
No... I believe we should do away with Amtrak.

It’s business model is terrible, it arrangement with its employees is terrible, and we can do better.
High speed rail is actually being sidelined to keep this shyt show going :scust:

And if revenue doesn’t matter drop ticket prices so that it’s like riding the bus. Go full retard...Don’t half ass it.

That's the rail industry. One union negotiating for every craft would honestly be a conflict of interest. Every craft has their own set of elected workers that's there to protect their interests. It would be like airplane pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers, runway maintenance techs, and baggage handlers having a single union. It doesn't work.

is it out of order to expect that public services operate without going into the red?

Yes it is. They provide services that the private sector can not or will not and they pay their employees and relatively well with a modicum of job protections. The beloved private sector wouldn't be so obscenely profitable without numerous government handouts such as favorable tax laws, toothless regulations, lack of regulation in certain areas, lack of enforcement of regulation and law, and outright subsidies in some cases. The private sector hasn't paid their way in a loooooooooooooooong time.

yes, how dare i ask that the government spends my money responsibly after they seize it from my paycheck through threat of imprisonment

I pay taxes too and I like Amtrak. What makes your one billionth of a cent per paycheck hold more weight than mine? I swear you all act as if your 20k per year in taxes is funding the ENTIRE government. :heh:

fair enough, but given that the government generates 0 dollars a year and someone has to get shyt done in this fukkin country, i imagine that's where the leeway comes from
