:dwillhuh::dwillhuh: nikkas is really saying Empire State of Mind was trash.

You couldn’t go to any party in New York in that era without hearing that song at least once that night.
Yeah. You heard a garbage ass song. A lot.

A lot of things that are “popular” are fukkin terrible. Alicia Keys, Tik Tok, Dogecoin…

she was that status before her debut album even came out

Questlove exposed her story back in the day about her basically being a label entity they couldn't figure out how to market for years until after neo soul was a thing.

there are performers and there's artists. Alicia to me is in that Bruno Mars class of talented performers I don't want to hear. Their art is very contrived. Their music has no identity

Bruno Mars made Target/CVS/JCPenny/Safeway background music before he switched up his whole style to shapeshifting time-traveling retro black radio. Everytime I hear that “girl your amazing” song at a grocery store I think, damn Bruno ain’t have no soul before going full vulture. :picard:

But too many R&B singers push the envelope on copying the legends because they lack their own style. The Weeknd is a bootleg Michael Jackson, that’s about 75% of his appeal. Bruno, The Weeknd etc. all eat off nostalgia factor. Even Alicia Keys got her whole blueprint from Patrice Rushen... Patrice was always more of an old school hood staple, so the influence was less obvious to non-R&B fans.

I can imagine if you live or work in Manhattan, you’ve wanted to assassinate Alicia Keys and Jay Z for making that NY song. :mjlol:You probably can’t go an hour without hearing that song living there. :scust:
