At this point...after the dust settles... I see the Knicks & Lakers sitting their dusty old asses alone with no notable free agent signings like...

Lakers: Guess the old money prestige is gone huh?
Knicks: *chuckles* yup, what can ya do, right?
Lakers: Yea...It's a shame really, you know with Kobe's last season?
Knicks: Yea, I feel for you. He deserves that last hoorah.
Lakers: *Smokes pipe* You know, we could shake up the NBA & see if Melo would like to help Kobe with one last shot!
Knicks: *Contemplates* Ha! That'd be something but who'd you give up?
Lakers: Russell straight up...
Knicks: You know... Mortomer...WE'RE BACK!!!!!

I anticpated players getting overpaid this offseason, but that deal blew my mind. Demarre is now the highest paid player on the Raptors :heh:

i just dont understand how that is the piece you build around... i mean look, obviously none of us know how these new contracts will play out... its entirely possible that 15 mil a year is the 9 mil a year... and 4 years 36 mil for demarre isnt insane.

:smugsilver:

:dead:

Delaying the inevitable, gonna try and trade Melo when it's too late and all he'll get you back is 2 2nd rounders cause Hinkie needs him to reach the salary floor.

It's all about getting maximum value from him, either as a player or as a trade asset.
that season that Melo had in 12-13 :whew:

That was a good goddamn year, man.

I Really Hope Thanasis Can Have A Good Summer League And Join The Team

It would be fukked up not to sign him, after convincing him to take WAAAAY less money and play in the NBDL. Plus we could use him.

Paul Milsap just got a full max offer from Orlando.....

Remember how everyone was like Melo's deal would look good next year..... It already looks like a steal

This is what we've been saying since last year, his deal is about to go from "yeesh" to "ehhh, alright" over the next year and a half. Which makes him easier to trade, or easier to put guys around, it just saps you from making a HUGE splash this year or next.

So everyone is making twitter headlines signing people...

Except us.

Is that a good or bad sign brehs? :lupe:

Oh & cosign the "Melo being a steal" after this money explosion. Well...that is if he is healthy going forward.

I'm not overly stressed about this... role players are about to be getting 8-12 million, and we'll probably do it, too. But I don't mind seeing where the market sets itself, and not being desperate to sign aminu or carroll.

Looks like our big free agent signings this summer will be Monroe & West :yeshrug:

Real talk, I don't even want west. But we'll see how it goes.

knicks should be at least able to get monroe and rondo.

No rondo. :PhilFinger:

when i saw the raptors sign demarre for 60 mil, first thought is... thank god they did it before the knicks could

:knickphil: -- but with the cap inflation about to happen, you have to consider that guys previously worth 7-9, are now worth 12-14.

It's early, I have a feeling, based on their drafting, that the knicks are also looking for some overseas guys to bring in on FA deals. I know they're bringing the 7'2 lithuanian kid back that they've been keeping tabs on, Ovidijus Galdikas -- kind of skinny, but has packed some muscle on in the last year and a half... plus he tries to finish everything strong, and seems to know how to use his length on defense. Could be useful.

If we don't land Monroe...I won't be upset. I think, seeing these new contracts and the ridiculous rate players are going for, I'd hold off on signing players and let the dust settle some. I'm hopeful that Phil's name in conjunction with all these secondary guys is because he wants them to be aware that until our cap space is spent they're possibilities; that way, they don't rush to sign a cheap one year deal with someone else. We get whoever falls through the cracks (maybe Wes Mathews or Afflalo, hoping Robin Lopez gets a look) on deals that would look good last year but are bargains in this new market. At the same time, preserve the cap space and wait for the season to jump off. Some of these movers won't work out (like Lance didn't in Charlotte) and some players may want out sooner than later (all eyes on Cousins tbh), and having the cap space to eat those contracts may be a huge help in figuring out deals to pick them up at a bargain.

Play the bargain game, get good enough to compete, wait and see how the trade market develops early and if all else fails...you'll have more cap space and a better core to sell FA's on next offseason.
