Because Phil is smart enough to realize Melo is not a championship caliber player, I mean it's fukking obvious as hell, why build around him when the writing is on the wall? Face facts, no amount of patch work FA signings this summer is going to get the Knicks even remotely close to the Cavs, Bulls or Heat.
The Knicks should no longer be about Melo this Melo that, you just took a chance on a player with a high potential, everything you do moving forward should be about maximizing his potential.
The Warriors traded Monta Ellis for pennies on the dollar because he was getting in the way of Curry's development. If you want Porzingis to reach his potential, Melo gotta go, it's that simple.
These guys gotta see it. Team has to be making plans BEYOND Melo.
At some point maybe you move him, maybe not. You gotta do what's best to build the best team you can LONG TERM. And if you can find a way to make melo work into that, great. If not, you'll move on.
Caps goin up, flexibility's going up.
Plus Phil went into the last two drafts with 1 pick, and finished with six players.
phil is the same dude that paid melo all that money tho
Yeah. He is. No way around it. But you take the job and your first move is to make a decision, and he decided to keep him. I dont' even hate it, because I think there will be a market for him, when and if they decide to flip him.
Plus the cap is going UP, which makes his deal look medium-sized quick.

First off

at slipping that treadmill bulls team in with the cavs and Heat. The Bulls aint winning shyt either
I don't see it as out of the question that the Bulls could get hot and give the Cavs a run, and the heat aren't special. Really anybody can come out of the east, except the Knicks.
So, I have no problem with any of this. Phil turned the roster over. Got a high-potential guy, and a new point guard. The team sucked last year, you'll need some bold moves, with an eye toward the future to get this team back to contention. Because it's not happening next year.
This team NEEDS to start thinking in 3-5 year increments.
Why? It's not like the Knicks are contending next year anyway so why not take the guy who you think will be great in a few years?
He even pointed out Dirk, like Dirk isn't 7 feet tall and much easier to hide defensively....because he's 7 feet tall
