For real though, so was she the one who gave it 5 mics? Was there not a committee within The Source?

Google "miss info illmatic review" everything will pop up.

I do agree with some not thinking for themsleves and being spoonfed by media. K-Rino is a good point, he has albums that if critically acclaimed they would be on his dikk hard., even though he would actually deserve the praise. But they don't give correct props now but would if it was lauded, I don't like that shyt.

illmatic is not an internet meme. #false

The idea that Illmatic is some "revolutionary, game changing album, that altered the face of rap" is revisionist tripe regurgitated by message board no nothings... the mythos that is Illmatic is most definitely an internet meme. nikkas in these streets and most rap fans outside of NY don't give a fukk and have never gave a fukk about a Illmatic. shyt is a cult classic at best.

There were damn there a half a dozen albums released in that year alone that had a far bigger impact on the game than Illmatic.

illmatic is the first debut for a lot of things in hip-hop #false

I don't want to comment on this lady as I don't know her or anything about her. But in general it's real a lot of these motherfukkers aren't REALLY Hip Hop. I agree some of these people don't relate, they don't understand the PAIN or REALNESS of a Pac or a K-Rino. Basically at their core, their hood/street artists, that rep the people, not about just the technical side.
Don't listen to that fakket ass Nas hater, that's Miss Info today of Hot 97 she's hip hop. Illmatic's 5 Mics didn't come from just for her she wrote the review but it was a unanimous selection from the editors of The Source which were black, white of all races really and all heads.

And nikkas showing their age by not knowing the circumstances behind Illmatic and it's sales :snoop:

Nope. It was her and her alone that was responsible for the rating AND the review.

Click on any of the links from the google search i refered you to and it will pretty much confirm what i'm saying.

She wrote the review since she was a columnist, it was a collective decision when they listened to it prior to it's release. Miss Info (Asian woman), Schott Jacobs (black man), Chris Wilder (black man), Jon Schecter (white man), Matteo Glenn (black man) among others.

"It's about 9pm… I get to the office and I gather all the heads in the conference room. I remember who was there: @MatteoGlen [the twitter account of Matty C, then The Source's "Unsigned Hype" editor] @CeeWild [twitter account of Chris Wilder, another editor], @FrozenFiles [twitter account of Schott 'Free' Jacobs, another contemporary editor]. Everyone is nodding their heads, eyes wide, mouths open, it's hip-hop paradise. We had a pretty shytty system in there but it didn’t matter, I pop in the tape and the powerful musical magic emits from the speakers. When those funky/eerie/powerful xylophone notes from 'One Love' come on, I remember @FrozenFiles is literally lying on the floor… He can’t comprehend how good it is. None of us can. It's the best shyt we’ve heard in our lives… Internally, we start debating how we’re gonna handle this. I say right away that it's gotta get a "5"

well i stated facts and you called em lies but then asked me to elaborate on them.

i would love to know what region and age you are since the perspective you are bringin is foreign.

Will do that now.

after you read the review you can feel free to ignore tony when it comes to nas as he is an obvious hater.

illmatic had a demo that been hit the streets. rumors were circulating around queens etc.

ms info didnt single handedly write the review, the streets crowned it a classic then a bunch of editors agreed on it later after the fact

illmatic had two bootlegs that i remember. the whole idea that this clown presented is based on emotion and not at all real.

and the list of albums that came out in 1994 that he said were more important culturally than illmatic is something else that is non exsistant

here is a random review of illmatic i found on google and it i much more impartial than tony
Illmatic is one of the legendary hip hop albums, often considered by many fans as the greatest hip hop album of all-time.

It's a title that it rightfully deserves because it's just so short and perfect. Nas is arguably the greatest technical MC of all-time. Flow, voice, wordplay, writing, diction, breath control, vocabulary, delivery and whatever else MC's are judged by, Nas just excels in all those categories. Over the 9 songs he just displays one of the finest performances of all-time that even made Rakim jealous and pale in comparision. He's backed up by some of the greatest producers of all-time, DJ Premier, Large Professor, Q-Tip, Pete Rock and L.E.S.. Each of these producers give Nas some of their best beats for him to spit his jewels over and each individual beat is truly great. Do not try to find any flaws in Illmatic, there is just none, it is so perfect.

Well I did find one major flaw about the album. It lacks ORIGINALITY. Illmatic is just beats and rhymes, it's one of the most basic hip hop albums ever and it never takes any risks. It doesn't have the innovative factor of the wave of '88 hip hop, it's never wild, fun or crazy. It's a predictable album because it's just a rapper rapping at the finest level possible over some of the finest loops. This is what hip hop is all about right? Well no I believe that there is more to hip hop than just this, and it's one of the main reasons why I can't say that Illmatic is the epitome of hip hop records. I'd rather listen to "Midnight Marauders" or "nikkaz4Life" cause they're just more fun.

Illmatic is still one of my all-time favorites because when I want beats and rhymes, there is just no better option than Nasty Nas goin' off. I think that hip hop's downfall from the "golden days" is in part due to the fact that the hip hop community worships Illmatic a little too much, 14 years later it's still the blueprint on how to make hip hop and just too many rappers forgot to be original rather than being technical. But with all that said, Illmatic is still one of the most essential hip hop albums to have and anyone that's a little bit into the genre probably already owns a copy.

I don't get what Miss Info being Asian has to do with anything. Miss Info is from the Southside of Chicago, she grew up around blacks, she was around this hip hop shyt in the golden era, and she's been working in hip hop for over 20 years.

What the fukk makes her opinion not valid? And what do Illmatic gotta do with KRS One having classics?

I always thought there was a committee, so when he said it was JUST Miss Info needed to check that out, I can't find any info that says it was just her. And what you just posted seems to indicate the opposite.

Wasn't rated 5 mics in these streets though

But keep trying validate your taste in rap based upon the co-sign of israelis-cacs that run the hip hop media & a small circle of message board nerds.

Close up your laptops, tablets and smart phones and step out in the real world and ask some ol' heads that was around from that era what you would find coming out of his speakers or walkmans back then... you'll hear Illmatic from no one. Wasn't nobody rockin' wit that fukk shyt outside of NYC. I bet nikkas in Rochester & Buffalo wasn't even bumpin' that buuushyt.

I don't agree with the racial insults/stereotyping, it isn't about the race but the Hip Hop in them or not. I don't know anything about Miss Info so can't comment.

from what i remember, there was a consensus among The Source when they first heard the tape that it should possibly be a 5 mic album and it was ultimately left up to Miss Info to choose if it would or not. the fact that they had only given i think 3 or 4 albums 5 mics in the past (technically 5 "broken records") and they were AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, De La Soul Is Dead, One For All and Low End Theory i think. that means Illmatic had to live up to A LOT to make it a 5 mic. i'm sure an NY bias came into it but with the amount of artists over the years that have talked about it's influence it's safe to say it's a classic and DID change the game
