It's a combination of everything.

If I used just one of the metrics as the most important, then Eminem and MC Hammer would be at the top of one list, and conversely Big L and Big Pun wouldn't even crack the top 25 on another (longetivity).

If I used catalogs as the end all be all, The Roots would be top 3-5 and Mos Def would score negative points for how inconsistent his is.

Fun Test: Go through and see how many categories YOUR GOAT has "strengths" in....

I said the other day: Pac and Biggie are 1 / 2 Goat, pick your order.....

And Jay, Nas, Wayne, Eminem round out the top 6...... When you look at how much categories each of them have:

Tupac - 7 - Flow / Delivery / Presentation, Album Sales, Classic Albums, *GROUNDBREAKING* Classic Albums, Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream, Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game", Entire Catalog

Biggie - 7 - Lyrical Content / Complexity (half a point here), Flow / Delivery / Presentation, Album Sales, *GROUNDBREAKING* Classic Albums (2 points here... ONLY PERSON with 2 undisputed ground breaking albums, only reason he has no "regular classics"), Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream, Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game", Entire Catalog (half a point here)

Nas - 6.5 - Lyrical Content / Complexity, Classic Albums, *GROUNDBREAKING* Classic Albums, Consistency / Career longevity / Ability to Stay relevant, Being a Forefather (half a point here), Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game", Entire Catalog

Jay - 6 - Flow / Delivery / Presentation, Album Sales, Classic Albums, Consistency / Career longevity / Ability to Stay relevant, Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream, Entire Catalog

Eminem - 5.5 - Lyrical Content / Complexity, Flow / Delivery / Presentation, Album Sales, Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream, Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game", Entire Catalog (half a point here)

Lil Wayne - 6 - Flow / Delivery / Presentation, Album Sales, Consistency / Career longevity / Ability to Stay relevant, Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream, Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game", Entire Catalog

I got some time I need to kill so here are my personal GOAT's in each category...

Lyrical Content / Complexity - Nas

Flow / Delivery / Presentation - Ghostface/JadaKiss

Album Sales - Jay-Z, Pac, Eminem

Classic Albums - Prodigy (Infamous, Hell on Earth, Murda Musik, HNIC.....and 5-10 years from now, Albert Einstein. I know he's also part of a group but he deserves mention in this category.)

GROUNDBREAKING* Classic Albums - Nas (Illmatic)

Consistency / Career longevity / Ability to Stay relevant - Ghostface (Consistency), LL (Longevity), Nas (Staying Relevant)

Overall Impact on the Hip Hop Genre / Culture and Pushing it into Pop Culture / Main Stream - This has nothing to do with the artist IMO, more attributed to Marketing, and label support. but for the sake of the question, i'll say LL.

Being a Forefather - Rakim, Pac, Nas, Jay-Z. Each influenced a population or generation of successful rappers

Most Years of Domination / Being the "Hottest Rapper in the Game" - LL/Jay-Z (during their run. Not saying they are still currently as dominant as their peak.)

Entire Catalog - Ghostface (Based on his solo albums alone. only 1 or 2 "weak" albums since his first solo nearly 20 years ago. not even considering the abundance of features and group songs.)

Surprised entire catalog is getting so many votes. I overlook the subpar material from all artists when evaluating them. Everyone has subpar material.

it depends on when they drop their subpar material.

i dont take points off when rappers drop bad albums after theyve already become a legacy act - as you call it.

but when they drop subpar material in the midst of their run, thats when i take points off.

The timing of the material doesn't really matter to me. Nas and Jay both dropped a lot of subpar material during the height of their popularity - but then they bounced back with strong LPs (or runs). At the end of the day - I look to the good stuff.

for me its "how often i listen to and listed to their music in my life"

its an arbitrary factor but its the most telling IMO
This what all this shyt should be based on

I brought it up when talking about classics. How can someone prove/disprove something is classic?

No one gave an answer

how often you personally listen to something doesnt necessarily determine how good or bad an album is. if anything, it mainly determines your favoritism.

i'd take boosie over KRS 9 times out of 10. but that doesnt mean i think hes better than KRS.

out of my 4 favorite current nba squads, none of them made the playoffs this year.

that's where i'm at with it. I'd put nikkas like Chamillionaire or Mystikal in my 10 over consensus greats like Nas or Rakim because I spent my formative years jamming their shyt religiously.I never fukked with a Nas album and not for lack of trying. But you sound like you don't know shyt about hiphop when you say 400 Degreez>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Illmatic...but...fukk all that. Its opinion. Its valid. If YOU think Curren$Y better, he better :manny:

i mean, is illmatic not your cup of tea? or do you just not think that its all that?

thats what it really comes down to.

I dont think its all that. To be fair, it was a little before my time and I was raised on southern/west coast production. Plus, it was so hyped as the greatest shyt ever, it created super high expectations. I feel like its one of those "you had to be there" situations honestly.

well if you legitimately think that its not all that, then yea, you shouldnt rank it high.

i dont see how tho but hey.:manny:

ehh, rakim & krs still get crazy play. i mean, its saturday night. turn to your local urban adult radio station right now, and youre bound to hear an eric b & rakim joint. i'd say that they get more play than mobb & nas at least.

it depends on who youre using as examples. i mean, naturally, most people who got into rap in the mid or late '90s will play artists like the latter endlessly while they probably havnt even heard much of rakim & krs' catalogs.
