And Knicks had 90-95.

Yankees being on top is a relatively recent thing.

If we're being totally honest if all NY teams were great at the same time the Knicks would absolutely be 1.
So you’re telling me that If the New York Knicks, instead of being a dysfunctional and poorly managed organization, were a model franchise like the Boston Celtics and had the same kind of history and the same level of success as the blue blood Celtics (winning history, respect from its peers, rich tradition, plenty of team accomplishments, multiple franchise banners, championship banners, individual trophies, dynasties, legendary and hall of fame calibre players, multiple championships) , they would be by far the most popular team in New York city?

New York City
TBH as a New Yorker, its hard to tell who is the top team in NYC....

I grew up going to school thought the whole 2000s in NYC and NONE of my peers were Knicks fan cause they had a bad team though most of the decade, my peers were bandwagon fans of teams with superstars like the Cavs (Lebron) and the Lakers (Kobe) for example. Now, it's possible the kids in school today are Knicks fan cause they are good and have Brunson. Most of them didn't watch baseball period so it can't be the Yankees or Mets.

Football, I can't recall ever meeting a Jets or Giants fan in High School. They usually discussed the stars in the league and neither football team had any superstars in the mid to late 2000s. Jets were boring to young ppl as they build their teams around defense, young kids usually like flashy football players that played on offense.... The Jets nor Giants had any players like this until OBJ showed up many years later.

Basketball was the most popular sport with my peers, but the Knicks weren't the most popular team with them. But that was back then, its possible the Knicks is the most popular with Gen Z New Yorkers, I don't interact with Gen Z so IDK what teams they root for.

Its also possible that those bandwagon fans or teams with superstars back then are bandwagon Knicks fans now, so if someone put a gun to my head and say to pick what I think is the overall most popular Pro team in NYC...... I'd say the Knicks. Baseball and NFL is split 50/50 *overall*, nobody cares about the Nets and I don't think Islander fans exist outside of Long Island.

Boston and NY are probably the only cities, major cities at that, in which the NFL teams are at best 3rd. Hell, the Giants are probably behind the Rangers.

Indianapolis is probably the Pacers

IM not a NY native but ive been to NY plenty of times over the last 20 years Rangers are not close to the Giants in terms of popularity...

I think the leafs always going to be one

mid 80s thru early 90s Jays were more popular and mid 10s Jays were def #1...

Ill say this as well in terms of nationwide coast to coast fans in Canada Jays are unquestionably #1...

SMF and LAX to VA and NC
39 cities have at least two major league teams. Most of these are educated guesses, some I'm more certain of than others. Two-league cities:

Buffalo
It's the Bills all day, no question.
New Orleans
Saints.
Milwaukee
Don't actually know!
San Jose
It's the Niners 🤣
Indianapolis
Pretty sure it's the Colts, could be wrong.
Columbus
Don't know!
Las Vegas
It's the Golden Knights for sure.
Portland
Definitely the Blazers
Vancouver
Canucks
Orlando
I would guess the Magic, but not certain.
Baltimore
I think it's close between O's and Ravens.
San Diego
Padres
Montreal
Canadiens

Three league cities:

Salt Lake
Jazz
Nashville
The Titans
Cleveland
Browns
Kansas City
I would guess Chiefs but I know Royals Fandom is huge too.
Cincinnati
Reds
Pittsburgh
The Steelers
Charlotte
Panthers
St Louis
Cardinals
Tampa
Guessing Bucs, but need help here.
San Francisco
They love both Niners and Giants but edge to Niners.
Phoenix
Cardinals?

4-league cities:

Seattle
Mariners or Hawks?
Detroit
Would guess Lions? @FTBS
Toronto
Leafs
Atlanta
I think they equally love the Braves abd Falcons
Houston
No clue

5+ teams:

Denver
Broncos
Minneapolis
Vikings
Boston
Probably the Sox?
Dallas
Cowboys easily
Miami
It's the Dolphins, they don't love other teams like they love the Fins
Philadelphia
Eagles
Washington
They don't love no one the way they love the Skins.
Chicago
Cubs or Bears? No one else is close
Los Angeles
Lakers or Dodgers, no one else is close
New York
Yankees, though I think Giants and Knicks are close

So my count is

NFL 20
NHL 4
NBA 3
MLB 5

With a number of cities I'm in question of. But this is enough of a sample size that showcases why NFL is king, in cities that have multiple majors present, NFL by far has the most popular teams...

Seattle
Mariners or Hawks?
The Mariners are #1 unless the seahawks are on a title run, from my 15 years here. I went to four Ms games in the last 2 weeks...and the stadium was pretty full for the weekend games, especially yesterday. Even when they was trash the games were still fun and they were still in the convo.

The official hat is the mariners hat

I will say, when the sonics come back there will be a real discussion for the #1 spot because seattle is a hoop city first and foremost

Don't forget LA, and the Rams actually probably the 4th favorite Football team in the city behind the Raiders/Cowboys/Niners :russ:

And Pittsburgh doesn't even need 2 other sports teams, that's how far ahead Steelers are
