"Identical to the PlayStation 5 and its detachable disc drive, customers will be able to buy the console individually as a "digital console", bundled with the PlayStation 6 as a "traditional console", or upgrade later by purchasing the detachable disc drive separately.

According to one source, unless things are changed at the last minute, PlayStation is "firm" on the decision because the disc drive for the PlayStation 5 hit all the company's internal targets. Again, it was reiterated by the source that the decision was made to reduce manufacturing and shipping costs during "uncertain times" (likely referring to the tariff/trade war).

These "uncertain times" have seemingly influenced PlayStation's decision on the look of the next PlayStation, too, as rumblings suggest that this time around, the PlayStation 6 will have a much simpler design than its predecessor, again to maximize efficiency, shipping space, weight, and so on."

You’ll have to pry my disks from my ashy, dry hands.

i dont trust Sony in regards to software preservation
Well when they stop making disc drives you gone be SOL either way.

People give microsoft a bunch of shyt. But they have been the best when it comes to rights and preservation of digital games. Which is why i only buy digital games for xbox.

I don’t think sony is just gonna erase peoples games tho.

Nintendo is the woat, i fully expect them to pull some bullshyt.

Get a blu-ray player. But still get the disk drive for your games cause you never know when they going to get took down from the store.
Even when games get taken down from the digital store. If you own them you can still play and download them at will.

You just can’t buy a new copy. It’s the same with physical games. When they are pulled form the digital store they are also pulled from the physical store.

Remember that the disc drive will be attachable and sold separately according to the article with a possible bundle with the disc drive as well. Changed the thread title. The ps5 attachable disc drive probably won't be compatible with the ps6 with a ps6 attachable disc drive being sold instead that will probably be $80-120.

Nah I don’t think they gonna erase games but everything before ps4 is kinda SOL.

I can deal with all digital if it’s like PC and it’s open or it’s like Microsoft where there is some attempt at comprehensive BC.

PC if I wanna play some random shyt and it’s not on steam I can just go find it elsewhere.

I got games from ps1/2/3 that sometimes I wanna play from my ps5 and I can’t. It’s annoying.

I still have ps3/2/1 and a capable emulation pc for these reasons.

For now, company policies can always change. You can find a physical copy in the aftermarket. Game preservation is One of the main reasons I support , console modding and emulation.

TYRONE GA!
figured it would be an add on. not even shocked if they stick with this.

been buying digital mostly anyway to save on costs sharing games with my son's ps5 at home.

oldest went off to college but told that nikka, I can only share my account on 1 PS5, so he gotta buy his own shyt.

fukked up part is I can't even kick him off from under my family until he turns 18 next month.

Discs and disc drives have a finite lifetime no matter how hard you try to “preserve” them.

The only real way to preserve games is digitally.

Good. I can't even remember the last time I bought a physical game. I think it was Killzone Shadow fall. But since then it's been all digital. GameStop mistakenly sent me Silent Hill 2 on a disc in an order once and I traded it back to them and used the credit to buy the digital version on PSN:mjlol:

Another reason I am a strong advocate for physical games. Sometimes I like to buy/find games on sale or on Facebook marketplace.

Sony market place is stingy with what they discount, when they discount it, and by how much. Because they don’t have another marketplace or any other factors to deal with they operate in a vacuum with no competition

Plus no option to resell.
