exactly.

big daddy kane was a legit celebrity. to say that rakim had a better career is "inside the box" thinking.

and yea, i like kool g. rap more than both of them in terms of personal favoritism, but i had him tied up with rakim because kool g rap loses points with me for not being a nice person. homeboy runny-ray doesnt condone the pimping and beating of women.

whats crazy is that these are regular debates between people that are of the era, but somehow rakim just became the undeniable victor over time with newer listeners. its wierd because kane appeals more to younger listeners than rakim.

:what: at kane being a legit celeb. Outside of Hip Hop very few knew who he was. LL was a legit celeb. I don't know if you were listenting to Hip Hop back then but Ra and Kane were on the same level when it came to celeb status.

As for career it embodies EVERYTHING not just a lukewarm R&B crossover hit. Rakim had the better career...history has proven it, no need to revise it.

:laff::laff:

you dudes are too much into rap.

sure, you can argue that the "legit celeb" title is a bit much. but the point is, people who dont listen to rap know who big daddy kane is. kane's name rings bells in circles that could care less about hip-hop and never heard of rakim. even :old: people in their 70s who still have their 45s record collections in their living room know who big daddy kane is. they dont know rakim.

youre a serious rakim fan. i get it. but you dont have to try to vouch for him as the man in every single category.

If they know who Kane is how could they not know who Rakim is, your sounding stupid right now.

Speaking from experience all the people that I know from that era (late 30's to early 40's) who are non rap fans will always mention 3 rappers:

KRS One
Big Daddy Kane
Rakim

Those who are a little bit more knowledgeable will usually throw in 3 others:

Kool G Rap
LL Cool J
Slick Rick

I'm tired of the retroactive continuity.

In fact I'm tired of people who were either:

A: Not even born

or

B: Not old enough to tie their own shoe laces.

Trying to tell people what was popping back then.

The internet combined with programs like Kazaa, Soulseek and Limewire, web hosting sites like Blogspot, Wordpress and online knowledge bases a la Wikipedia have allowed people to front like there is no tomorrow, it's pathetic.

Kane enjoyed some modicum of celebrity sure, he posed for Playgirl and was a model in Madonna's book Sex :mjpls:, that doesn't mean he was bigger or more well known than Rakim, they basically went hand in hand, you could not separate one from the other.

In a nutshell trying to argue about whose celebrity status was greater is just splitting hairs for arguments sake.

There was a lot of back lash on BDK after he dropped "taste of chocolate" lp

I bought that tape and I liked it (Kane vs Dolemite) Lol

.. but most people thought he went too far in the wrong direction

It wasn't until the Biggie era that I started hearing slot of people saying Rakim is better.. I think because many rappers looked up to Rakim that it caught steam

But that "I ain't no joke" also kind of shut down alot of Kane's buzz

My personal favs from back then

1) LL Cool J
2) Ice Cube
3) Kane
4) KRS
5) Chuck D
6) Rakim
7) kool G rap
8) kool Mo Dee
9) kool keith
10) Master Ace/Scarface/D.O.C./Slick Rick/Kurtis blow

I vouch for reality not some made up revisionist history. I was listening to Hip Hop during that time and both along with LL, Slick and Ice T were my favorite rappers. During that time Ra and Kane were pretty much even whether it was popularity, classic albums/songs, record sales, skills but once the 90s hit Kane's career fell off while Rakim put out another classic and two near classics afterwards.

pretty much. Kane may of had a slight edge because of I Get The Job Done and his name is very memorable.

no. YOURE THE ONE SOUNDING STUPID RIGHT NOW. and i could easily ether the f**k out of this entire post, and i should do that since you want to take pop-shots and try to play somebody out of nowhere, but i'll play nice....for now. oh and your little internet/limewire/blogspot comment applies moreso to you, not me. so basically what we have is someone who actually came up in this chit being labeled as an outsider BY AN ACTUAL OUTSIDER. watch yourself in here b.

speaking from experience of people you know in their late 30s/early 40s? do you not realize that this is rakim & bdk's age group? im speaking on people who are way older and could care less about rap. im also speaking on people who are of that age and younger who could care less about rap.

theres a reason why people are saying rakim was nas and kane was jay. do you not understand why?

and i could care less whos celebrity was greater. i just made one comment responding to someone and it got blown into a whole nother thing. next time you want to jump in side-arguments, make sure you know whats going on first.

also, are you really saying that LL has 2nd-tier notoriety behind people like rakim & krs-one and on the same level as a kool g. rap? LL is a name that best comes up amongst the more knowledgable crowd? man this is some clown chit.

youre still confusing albums & songs with star-power.

if you dont follow hip-hop or dont live with somebody who does, then you most likely dont know who rakim is. but theres a STRONG chance that you may know big daddy kane.

Only if Kane had followed up. This (slowed ver) [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xYrV2dLQok&feature=youtube_gdata_player[/ame]

With a R.A.W. 2 diss

He might have made it there

Still my personal favorite though

If you listen close enough you hear the subtle jabs they were throwing back then..

Rakim was basically saying don't play with my lines

And Kane replies you're using them wrong.

Firstly: :umad: furious in fact based off of your opening salvo, truth hurts doesn't it?

I should just throw your post in the bushes but I'll settle with the :trash: for now.........

I see you for what you are, your a poser a poor one at that, and your a hypocrite to boot, your the first person that usually says dumb stuff like:

Real heads didn't fukk with (insert rapper/song) in the hood.

Ross is better than Biggie.

or my personal favorite:

Mcgruff had more hits than Wu Tang. :youngsabo:

Or....

As you have become known for doing, trying to pass off your personal opinion as actual fact, in one of those Homeboy runny ray retro throwback at the tail end of 86, black belt edition threads.

By the way your second paragraph is a classic example of personal opinion being passed off as fact, as I said how could you mention one and not the other generally the Big 5 go hand in hand:

KRS One, BDK, Kool G Rap, LL Cool J, Rakim.

Your position was that non hip hop fans would only mention Kane and not Rakim, mine was that your standpoint was a steaming crock of shyt.

At the end of the day it's all about beats and rhymes fukk all that star power bullshyt, which is a strawman argument people use when they realize that their standpoint holds no weight to begin with, but we already knew that didn't we?

I have to admit it, your master at moving the goalposts though.

im furious how? because i bolded a few words?

lol @ this little rundown. if youre gonna be on somebody's top, at least be accurrate with it:
- people make note of the fact that "*insert overhyped internet rapper* gets no play in the hood" all the time on here. why is it a problem when i say it? maybe because i said this about a certain rapper that you like and you caught feelings? is that the reason for this creepy post of yours?

- i never said rick ross was better than biggie. theyre not even in the same ballpark in my book. and even if i did say such, that would be a personal opinion. it shouldnt be something that you follow somebody around and heckle them over.

- i never said mcgruff had more hits than wutang. i said he had more hits than a number of the members(who have zero hits). and i only said that in response to someone. if you want to poke your nose in other people's convos and quote them about it a year later, then you need to get your facts str8.

- i never pass off opinions as facts. im one of the few people on here that actually understands the difference between the two.....obviously youre not one of them.

- nor do i even give opinions in any retro threads. again, get your facts str8.

- and if you dont like my threads(concerning any topic), then dont read them. im not your problem, and i shouldnt be this much on your mind. this chit is not healthy.

theres no truth in your post, like you claim. just a bunch of misquotes and no-quotes. whats funny is, i dont even notice you unless youre quoting me, talking some slick chit.

and yes, you exposed yourself with that comment concerning this thread that i called out yesterday. and i wouldnt have even said nothing if you didnt come in this thread with the sole intention of toppin' me off.

now there. i finally gave you the attention that youve spent months begging for.

now take your little mancrush elsewhere. im not with that funny-funny chit.
