That Philly game was an exposure of epic proportions of just how trash NY's defense has been. I hate Jose, but it wasn't his fault. Ish blew by him........He also blew by Gallo and everyone else. He even crossed them over at the rim.........over and over again — that's how quick he is. It's not your fault that a player is just faster than you. That's why you have centers. When he got by them, he did not make shots (he was 8-28). He got 16 assists and that's on NY. Not the pg's.
In the 2012-2013 season (NY's best recent season), the Bulls showed that penetration does not have to result in buckets. Felton's penetration was resulting in 3's raining against everyone except the Bulls because the Bulls let Felton penetrate as much as he wanted. Get layups and lobs to Chandler as much as he wanted, but they stayed at home with the shooters, so the rest of NY did not make shots. NY lost. I think this was the 2nd game against them that year in Chicago. I believe they got swept that year by them too.
So, why was Philly scoring on Ish's penetration? Because NY has decided that once their offense picked up, they didn't wanna play defense anymore. They haven't played defense since November. Then they want 'Melo back, so that they can continue to outscore teams, bailing out their trash defense once again. I'm not saying Philly can't shoot. They can. They choose not to. But NY is a team that has stopped some of the most explosive offenses in the league. From the SAS, to OKC, to the Cavs (3 times).
They gave up 110 points to BK (letting Bogdanovic go off on them and Robin got abused by his brother — 'Melo wasn't hardly about to stop any of that, the refs did cheat NY late in the game and there's no excuse for that, but NY also let BK score 54 points in the 1st half when the refs were much more fair to NY), 47% fg and 50% 3fg to Memphis, and we all know what just happened against Philly.
All that to say, NY needs to step up their defense if they're serious about making the playoffs because their offense isn't that great. I wouldn't put my money on NY being consistent offensively to the point where they can rely on trying to outscore teams. Some of the players who have been making shots lately can fall off at any time for any number of reasons. We've seen it happen all year with all of the players.
