I'll have to ride with Quake 3 since that's what got me into arena FPS. I love UT too tho, we need some new arena-style FPS games, getting tired of all these military shooters

yeah fps games were around before quake but quake was a fukking light year jump forward. ut99 was heavily influenced by quake. don't even know how anyone could deny that.

Yeah and all of those games before Quake were Doom clones.. lol

I recommend everyone read the book. "Masters of Doom". Its a great read on how ID software started all of this. Lets not forget that Valve started with the Quake 2 engine.

Again the Unreal engine was used more because Epic from the jump wanted to license and support it. Carmack stated he just wanted to create engines but didnt want to give tech support for them.

Heres a great example, you your self can now license the Unreal 4 engine for $20 a month and 5% of whatever your game makes. Epic now wants some of that indie money.

in this thread:

people who think Unreal Tournament 99 is the first Unreal game saying its influenced by Quake when theirs Unreal games before both Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. :mindblown:

Unreal Tournament is just an improved Unreal game.

Quake 2 came out December 1997
Unreal came out in May 1998.
Quake 3 came out in December 1999.
Unreal Tournament came out November 1999.

Quake 3 plays more like Unreal than Quake 2

the key thing in all of this is that Quake 2 plays like Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein and Doom but was faster paced. But not in the same stratosphere as the other 3 games being mentioned

I had the collector editions of both Unreal Tournament 99 and Quake 3

and unlike a lot of the people giving they comments in here, I actually owned all 4 games

yall not gonna rewrite history while im around

Quake 3's the best shooter I've ever played. CTF matches were unbelievable and the mods kept me fed. Played the game constantly til about '06.

UT was fun, especially 2k3, but Quake would always pull me back in. Felt more badass too.

Never played these shooters :yeshrug:

#teammissedout

Jesus :wow:

Did you atleast game on PC back then? I legit feel sorry for gamers that missed out on that era. So many classics :banderas:

I don't know why you are going so hard on this..lol I'm not saying which one is the better game, I'm just saying without the Doom/Quake Engines, you wouldn't have Unreal.

Just Stop...lol It started with Wolfenstein and then Doom with Multiplayer( but multiplayer lagged a lot ) The Quake 1 engine fixed a lot of the lag problems. I'm working on my own little game right now, so I'll just leave this here.

I don't expect you to watch this 2 hour video( I've only listened to it in my car ), but somewhere in here he gives credit to JC.

Next, Tim stated from the beginning he wasn't working on just an engine, but a business( around the 7min mark ). This video also talks about how he started Epic( so its a great watch regardless )
Around the 13min mark he goes into how they were creating 2D and were influenced by ID Software.

"
By now, Schmalz had given most of the control of the engine's development to Tim Sweeney, the affable programmer who GT Interactive chairman and CEO Ron Chaimowitz refers to as "clearly one of our industry's geniuses." But even Sweeney has his heroes - namely id Software's John Carmack. Sweeney's praise of Carmack's influence leaves little room for interpretation: "Much in the same way that no man will ever top Isaac Newton's contributions to physics, Carmack will always remain way ahead in his total contribution to the gaming field, having invented the first-person shooter genre, the multiplayer model for gaming we know today, and much more." For Sweeney, who founded Epic based on a little-known game called ZZT, developing the engine for Unreal would not only be his biggest programming task ever, but his attempt to beat Carmack at his own game."

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the most skill related FPS we'll ever see in our life times... companies scared to go down that road now, cause the casual FPS players on console cant keep up :beli:

thats cool... at least we got to experience it..

UT99 was the most popular installment I think

Quake 3 had a good run to... dont think its fukkin with Unreal Tournament series though but I have no issue putting it #2 on GOAT FPS series..

Its unreal Tournament, then Quake... then everything else :heh: its funny how no other games are even CLOSE to these games in the skill department.. I mean not even in the same fukkin city let alone league let alone ball park

I was a top 10 competive quakeworld (thats quake1) player back in the early 2000's, and i must say this is not true. Quake by far is a much harder game in terms of speed of gameplay and mechanics involved; you don't even have to bunny hop in UT lol.
