Hell yea. We would beg my dad to take us to blockbuster and he swore he had no money.

He'd finally take us and at the register he always had 100 dollar bills in his wallet

As a kid, there was nothing better than a Friday night when mom asked if I wanted to rent to a game from Blockbuster. Toonami when I got home. Cartoon, Cartoon Fridays right afterwards. Mom arrived home and we'd head to Blockbuster. Pizza Hut (back when they were actually good) was literally in the same plaza, so we'd stop by there once leaving. The best part was knowing you were out of school for the weekend, so staying up late and playing that rental wasn't a problem. Don't let your parents tell you that you could rent two games instead of one. :wow:

Yeah, I miss Blockbuster. Do I wish I had access to things like PS Plus & Gamepass as a 5 - 14 year old? Absolutely, but there was nothing like walking into a Blockbuster and seeing Spider-Man (PS1), GTA Vice City, or Smackdown (PS1) on the shelf for the first time. Hell, the first Mass Effect was a blind rental for me when it dropped and became one of 10 favorite video games of all time. Grabbing candy at the checkout was unmatched, too.

It's more convenient today by far and I envy the youths accessibility, but I wouldn't trade my experience from that era. My kids won't ever truly feel the simplistic magic of walking into a Toys 'R Us or Blockbuster on a Friday or Saturday night.

Not really. It was a cool experience for sure but all the good games would get rented ASAP and they only ever had a small amount of copies. Good luck tryna get a copy near release date.

They were bytches about late fees too.

Picking up games based on the cover and the limited amount of info on the back was a crapshoot lol

I’ve said this before but lowkey feel like this is the reason a lot of 6’s and 7’s back in the day gained such a cult legend status. Sometimes games that weren’t the greatest were the ones that were always available at blockbuster so when you couldn’t get anyhting else you had to pick up something like smash tv or that horrible lion king game.

not only that but you were forced to play it also. It was your new game for the weekend so you put your all into getting the most out of it and part of that memory slowly turned into being mixed into a good gaming moment because of the circumstances.

I dont think any of these less than great Games have that ability anymore. People have so many options and games are so accessibile people just move on, even for good games. It plays into people having lower attention spans, thats if kids just don’t settle for watching their favorite streamers play it instead.

And of a male was at the counter you could rent an M rated game no problem without a adult

But if a woman was at the counter :francis:

I remember i went to a big sleepover and the kids dad took us to blockbuster and was like get whatever yall want! They had street fighter 2 the anime movie, and we got mad hype only for the dork at the counter to say it was a rated R movie and we had to put it back.

we ended up getting that Leslie Nelson Dracula movie instead. :dead:

You needed a credit card to use Blockbuster.

I had student loans from my one year of college, still haven't paid off. So that option wasn't available to me.

When I used other or Redbox, it was a pain in the butt, giving them there physical copy back.

Blockbuster? No. But Brick & Mortar stores, yes.

One of the upsides with BM Stores, is that you can rent games to see if they were shyt before making a purchase.

It's why I bought Earthbound, because once word caught on how dope it was, it started to get rented out before I could get a chance to continue playing it.
