Lotta talk this postseason crowned him as if he was already that dude. All I'll say is, as much as the regular season showed his growth as a Y2 quarterback, the playoffs showed just how far he needs to go.

Which isn't an indictment because again he's only played two years. My only issue is how people spoke about him as if he already belongs in the elite category. As much as Darnold throws 50/50 passes, he's simply a more consistent decision maker than Maye is at this stage, and falt out better.

Maye has a bright future. He's not That Guy yet.

He did play 4 of the best defenses in the league and was under siege. The best QBs have had struggle playoffs runs.

QB more so than any other position is about reps and experience. A guy in year 7 should be better than a guy in year 2.

That said, he made some bad decisions tonight. But all QBs are liable to do that when under constant pressure.

You understand this. I understand this. But a whole lot of NFL Media didn't. This entire postseason, with each passing game, has been rife with discussion about how Maye has ascended to a level near the top of QB play in The League. Every game they won was a statement about Maye rather than how the Patriots were winning these games, and who against.

I don't have a problem with his play because I understand where he is in his progression. I thought it was clear all year that he's made a leap from Y1 to Y2, but not so much of a leap to put him next to the Allen class of guys. The playoffs began, and it was clear that the playoffs were a really big stage for him---->any competent offense is beating NE in a game Maye turned it over what, 4x? He was bailed out by the other QB (Stroud) being worse, but that's a game he should've lost.

The AFC Championship, the Patriots were on the fukking ropes until Stidham turned it over, Broncos were primed to go up two scores. Tonight proved what I already suspected, which is that a Maye-led offense is not yet able to overcome a two score deficit vs elite teams. If Denver goes up 10-0 or 14-0, they'd been the ones playing Seattle tonight.

The entire postseason put his weaknesses on a platter fir everyone to see.

Campbell at LT was getting worked all night, and honestly most of the playoffs. You could see it wearing on Drake as the rounds went on—his reads sped up and he started anticipating pressure that wasn’t always there. Maye is athletic, but he’s not Lamar or Caleb-level athletic, so he’s not just going to escape everything. On top of that, LG Wilson struggled pretty much the entire postseason too. Hard to believe the Pats made the SB with two rookies on the left side of the OL playing like that.

As for Maye himself, he’s always hunting the big play. He’s got to learn to take the checkdown and keep the chains moving. There were multiple 3rd downs where guys were open underneath for a first, and his eyes stayed downfield. It reminds me of early-career Peyton in the playoffs, when the Pats would take away the deep stuff and the Colts’ offense would stall (not saying Drake is Peyton). Once Peyton learned to live with checkdowns, he started beating the Pats. Brady built a GOAT career off taking what the defense gave him. That’s a step Maye still needs to take.
