Quick question. Why do y'all want or expect young rappers to rap like its the 90s

Not at all, but I do expect some of these new/younger rappers to show some effort. Some of the music being made is flat out embarrassing, and make some of the shytty rappers of past years (Shawty Lo, Chingy, J-Kwon, Jibbs, V.I.C, etc) look like Goodie Mob by comparison.

One reason I don't cut much slack is cause there's some younger rappers actually spitting, and you'll have another one the same age sounding like some drugged out fiend. For example, Migos all broke out when they were 19-21, and even though they don't rap about much, they can actually spit as far as their flow/delivery goes. I would not have expected them to rap like Nas at 18, cause there's a world of difference in being 18 in 1994 vs being 18 in (at the time) in 2012/2013. Now look at this lazy fiend sounding dude Lil Yachty at 18 in 2016. Ain't no excuse to be that trash and wasting everybody's studio time doing what he does.

And most definitely agree about you not needing to be lyrical to be considered dope, but can these rappers do more than mumble, grunt, and hum over decent beats??

I'm in my early 30's and I don't mind the new music, I actually enjoy a lot of it.

My only problem is where is the diversity?? Everybody keeps putting out the same shyt.

this exactly.

im old and i fux with young thug, migos, future, bronson, meyhem lauren, roc marci, ka, kevin gates, whoever

it dont matter if the music is tight.

but mainly alot of these nikkas all just sound the same and make no effort to push shyt forward. they just see what 'on' nikkas is doing, and just do that.

I don't expect rappers to rap like it's the 90's, but standards of quality still have to be high, there's rappers that came out after the 90's that do their own thing at a high level without sounding mentally retarded and devoid of skill or substance.

Well rappers are definitely more creative nowadays.

And why do motherfukkas have to be "lyrical" to be good anyway. Some of our greatest rappers were not lyrical at all.

"Lyricism" as a whole wasn't even something that hip hop was built up on. Rappers from the 80s weren't lyrical miracle. That was only a staple on the east coast when Ra came thru for a couple of years.

Then west coast music came thru with more emphasis on bass, synths n musicality. Dre n Eazy weren't spitting multi's n doubles

like many other trends this genre has gone thru. Being lyrical was a fad. And something that should be seen as a side dish rather than a main requirement
You don't have to spit all kinds of multis and doubles to be lyrical. You don't have to be a complex spitter. Someone like Cube was a lyricist simply becuz his words were powerful. Dude could say in more in 8 bars than some rappers do in a whole song. Every lyric meant something and he didn't waste words. He knew how to paint a picture with his words

I just want to understand what they say fukk all that mumbling bullshyt.

Basically

Which is why I respected Odd Future, Danny Brown, ASAP Rocky, Childish Gambino and Chance The Rapper, they said fukk that and made their own lane.

Yep, they did they own thing, building on what came before them and adding their own vibe to it.

OP, I'm 35 and I don't want young cats to sound like the 90s. I mean if someone comes out and does it well, cool, but I'd rather they create their own quality thing. Which is why I never really became a Joey Badass fan tbh. If I want 90s music I go to my collection.

If they had skill and ability, I'd let them cook, but they're basically embracing being trash, so I feel free to shyt on them as often as I feel. I haven't taken MCing seriously in over a decade, and I'm sure I could wash these new weirdo nikkas off the dome. Total outclassing situation.

The genre has been around 40 years.

Even if you could argue that new rappers are creative....not more creative....just plain creative....you can't compare it to the 80's or 90's when entire new sub-genres of rap were being created left and right. There isn't currently anything as creatively monumental as the birth of gangsta rap, or the first time rappers implemented skits on their album, or the shift Rakim caused, or the first time an album like "Death Certificate" dropped. That's not nostalgia, that's reality.

It's like....PS4 is cool....but it's not as big a leap as going from nothing to video games existing in the first place. There will never be another leap that big.

Anyway, more to the point of the thread....I don't want people to rap like the 90's. I want people to rap better than that.

What that means, or what it would entail....I don't know. Just like the first time I heard LL Cool J "Radio" I couldn't fathom the genre getting better than that. But artists figured it out. Nobody is trying to figure it out nowadays. Most people are either in cruise control mimicking things people did before or biting new trends.

Not a single soul who isn't a deaf, dumb, delusional dikkrider is stupid enough to imagine the type of advanced lyricism & musicianship displayed in the 90's to be replicated by mumble mouthed, remedial ass estrogen goons with absentee thot mommas looking for a come up by selling club music for c00ns & mayonnaise mongrels :mjlol:

Won't even get into how foolish it would be to compare modern day metrosexual bando mumblers to the GOAT our Flow Lord and Lyrical Savior Hova Da Gawd's GOATness

Make your little fast food fukk boy music all you want, cuz some of it be poppin, but understand that ultimately it don't mean shyt cuz the GOAT our Flow Lord and Lyrical Savior Hova Da Gawd already crushed the buildings with VerseOTY on ATWU

I don't really care at this point. Let young dudes do them. When their era comes to a close, their place in history will be written. For better or worse.

I mean clearly we are in different times. Why ya expect a early 20 year old to rap like a artist who was making moves before he was even able to form a sentence?

It's corny to hold younger mcs to a standard that they weren't even around for just to fulfill ya own personal expectations.

That's like me expecting rappers in 2030 to be rapping like Future or Migos and getting butt hurt if they dont.

It's idiotic.
how about they just rap.... i don't care what era you rapping from... mumbling and not even rhyming while repeating the same thing over 80% of the song IS NOT rap
