You play music. You perform music. You sing, rap, shout, yodel music. Then you listen.

Nothing has to be written. You can know what things are and how things are meant to sound without knowing how to write it.

Michael Jackson didn’t sit down and write the lyrics to Beat It or Billie Jean nor did he sit and write the basic arrangement. He beatboxed and hummed the skeletal beat to Beat It and wrote 90% of the lyrics in his head and mumbled the rest.

That’s genius. Technical proficiency at music can be taught. That Michael Jackson, that James Brown, that R Kelly, that Kanye West. That’s genius. Don’t need formal education or skills for that

This makes 0 sense. Because he'd have to read to work the hardware, select anduse software plug-ins, change settings (to know what he's influencing on the plug-ins), name settings etc.

Yeah. Even with an engineer in the studio he would have to do so much himself outside of obviously writing hit songs for himself an numerous other people. I’m not even sure he’d even be on a “just literate enough” scale if such a thing exists. And 25+ years in his career I’m sure he would’ve gotten his literacy situation in order.

Jazz music and its complexity werent created by people who could read sheet music or people who would be considered highly literate.

Hell the basis for all American music, gospel/soul and blues, were created by people who were 100% illiterate. Slaves who weren't allowed to learn how to read or write. And jazz came out of that too.

Music is mainly patterns. If you know where a note is - say middle C - then you'll (eventually) know all the keys accordingly that create the chords. Like others have said, many, many, MANY of the greatest musicians didn't read music. That was the basis of the Marvin Gaye case. Thicke's lawyers tried to claim their side by using music notation, but Gaye's side pointed out that since Marvin couldn't read music, the transcription was largely worthless (which is was).

These are your heroes, people like this. and Kanye, Trump or whomever, just know that you are way more intelligent than any celebrity. They don't have to have the patience for learning when they are worth millions.

There's another part of this though. A lot of the super educated people in this country have no financial literacy and don't really know how to earn a dollar without being told exactly what to do. You're better off focusing on the things that society values/rewards than you are on just "being smart" for smart's sake.

Honestly you will be shocked how many everyday functioning people can’t read or write. They’ve smarten up to squeak through the cracks of the system. Most aren’t in employed though.
