He couldn't write "Getting Jiggy Wit It" :manny:

Again take it as you will but Nas said in an AMA a few years back that he didn’t write Gettin Jiggy Wit It but he was in the studio with Will while he was writing and gave him a few lines

Alright, let’s clear this up once and for all. I hung out with Will in the studio. And watched him write it. It was a fun studio session, and I said a line or two or three to him. It wasn’t that serious. Will Smith wrote that song. But seriously, I watched him have fun making that record on his own, and Will is a true MC,” Nas says.

I know NYC holds on to dude being the GOAT ...but I've never seen it ....his shyt was always hella boring to me ...in 1987 I was 9 so obviously his stuff didn't appeal to me...but as I got older and went back to listen it still don't hit....to me the best from NYC at that time was LL, KRS, and Kane...plus he didn't last long enough and too many ppl surpassed him quickly.....

LL was not seeing Rakim. KRS wasn't either.

Kane and Rakim were my favorites as a kid and it would've been a great battle but after hearing those bars Rakim had for him I don't think Kane had a chance on wax.

Rakim was just on another level at the time. It might be hard to appreciate if you weren't there but he raised the bar. He made the Shan's, Moe Dee's, and the other guys before him sound average to wack. They were just rapping while Rakim was a lyricist. Only thing comparable is when Nas dropped Illmatic.

I knew I'd get flamed for this post IDGAF. You realize there's a middle ground where you can be fashionably current and age appropriate? Ra dresses like a dude that caught a body in the late 90s and just came home not realizing times have changed lol
nikkas took what you said to heart because that's how I they be

Will Smith is a legend, but his bars and wordplay were never tough or clever .

He got a lot of mileage of the MIT comment, and that helped market him as a "kid friendly, suburban" rapper.

He said in an early interview that he once wanted to apply to MIT...and it got twisted into "he turned down a scholarship to M.I.T. to pursue his rap career".

Correction. He was accepted into a Pre-Engineering program. His mother was friends with the admissions officer at MIT and they needed black kids. Will’s SAT’s were high enough for him to get in but he never wanted to nor intended on going to college so he didn’t apply.

According to Smith, "My mother, who worked for the School Board of Philadelphia, had a friend who was the admissions officer at MIT. I had pretty high SAT scores and they needed black kids, so I probably could have gotten in. But I had no intention of going to college."

garden variety hollywood interview answer......changes every time the topic comes up

here he says a different version of the story

Will Smith: Big Willie Style

What kind of student were you?
I was the fun one who had trouble paying attention. Today they’d diagnose me as a child with ADHD [attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder]. I was a B student who should’ve been getting A’s – classic underachiever. It was hard for me to read an entire book in two weeks. Today I buy a book and have someone read it for me on tape! [Laughs loudly]

You won a scholarship to study computer engineering at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology – why didn’t you go?
It didn’t feel right. At seventeen, my first record came out in June. I was already gone with this career, and my dad said, “Let him do what he wants.”

I’m surprised he had that reaction.
He said, “He’s not going to be happy if he doesn’t make his own decisions about life.” My mother, meanwhile, was losing it. We even visited the MIT campus, but I was scared of it. It just looked . . . hard! She couldn’t believe I’d give up MIT for rap. This was before anybody made money rapping – only Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J and Beastie Boys.

============================
The pre engineering program that he mentioned in your quote ,is the kind of summer enrichment program that colleges offer to rolling high school seniors. He was probably awarded a scholarship to attend THAT program.

Wait, arguably the greatest rapper ever is just randomly in recording studios with Will Smith? Why?

Jazzy Jeff is on record saying that Will wrote Summertime himself and that he instructed Will to slow down his flow and not be as hyper as he usually is on wax, hense the Rakim type flow

yea i expect him to say that, either way still a classic record..

Wait, arguably the greatest rapper ever is just randomly in recording studios with Will Smith? Why?

Trackmasters produced BIG WILLIE STYLE (and of course IWW) + they were labelmates.

@Ziggiy Knowledge the Pirate said the exact same shyt about Will, he writes his own raps but Will is an OLD SCHOOL rapper at heart so he asks people how to update his raps/style. He did it with Nas and Knowledge was involved in some of the older shyt, but everybody always says Will was the writer first and foremost.
