from a technical standpoint? Yeah, Ra is better. He's from that school where you can hear how they measured their flow and enunciation. Like if the syllable didnt catch the snare, they was doing the take over.

How dude up there described it? "In the pocket"?

yeah. in the pocket rhyme style.

Nas. Of course Nas is where he is today because of Ra, but naturally rhyming is evolving so it would have to surpass it's previous form.

If Nas didn't surpass Ra, then something would be wrong.

Besides just purely technical concerns, you have to take into account the replay value of the work. I listened to Ra's latest album exactly once and even now have no desire to revisit it. Not so with Nas' work.

Nas has not added on to any technical rubrick that rakim advanced.
Again on no day is nas as good as rakim.

whats so complex about you can picture like a photo? LOL

man fukkouttahere..

Lol you're comparing 1988 Rakim to 1999 Nas though.

Rakim is technically superior to Nas, but they should be using his mid 90s verses to display it. No matter how great Rakim was in the 80s it's going to look basic compared to 90s elite rap. But 90s Rakim was on some other shyt.

Nas is a more descriptive lyricist when it comes to painting pictures. Rakim is a more technically superb lyricist when it comes to rhyme schemes, compound words and the like.

Fair enough but Rakim at his peak lyrically, is on some whole other shyt

Just when things seemed the same, and the whole scene is lame
I come and reign with the unexplained for the brains 'til things change
They strain to sling slang, I'm trained to bring game
History that I arranged been regained by King James
Go to practice, with tactics, when the track hits, theatrics
Women that look like actress the status of Cleopatra's
Stacks of mathematics to feed your asiatics
As I find out, what the facts is, for geographic
No time to sip Mo's with hostess, never mind what the total gross is
I rip shows, stay focused, and split cheese, with soldiers
While you hit trees and coast I spit flows that be ferocious
And with these explosives, I split seas for Moses
Shine permanently only my mind's concernin me
Fire burns in me eternally time's eternity
Followers turn on me they'll be in a mental infirmary

Since the first days you know of, till the last days is over
I was always the flow-er, I made waves for Noah
From a compound, to the anatomy, to the breakdown of a atom
Some of my rap patterns, still surround Saturn
From the ancient hieroglyphics, to graffiti painted pictures

Date back I go beyond, check the holy Qu'ran

So being benificent, I bless em with dialogue

Blast beat with saxophones one of the baddest rappers known
Every country city and borough, sidestreet and ghetto
Isle and alley and meadow, theories thorough enough to echo
When it was one mass of land, with one nash' of man
And the whole mass was ran under one master plan
Since the world's metamorphis, and the plan is kept in orbit
Turntables we spin awkward but needles never skip off it
Rhythms we expressin similar to our ancestors
It'll answer your questions if you understand the message
From the days of the slave choppers, to the new age of prophets
As heavy as hip-hop is I'm always ready to drop it
From the mind which is one of Allah's best designs
And mines'll stand the test of time, when I rhyme

You really don't know the technical base of emcees and you giving nas props over rakim easily shows that.

Art, Im not gonna argue over this. Nas surpassed Rakim in all aspects of hip hop. As well as most of the 90's Icons did.

I love 80's rap. But the progression of 90's lyricists is just far superior. I respect the Ra's, the Kane's the LL's etc... (list is long)

But, they faded in the 90's for a reason. These guys were in their 20's in the 90's at that...

and Rakim is in my top 10 just to let y'all know

I downloaded Rakim's discography the other day and Rakim is on another level. You have to consider that Ra was spitting like a rap god in 1987. Let that sink in for a second. Almost 30 years ago. Anyone else spitting at that time, sounds dated and their flow is lame but Ra had a way with words and his voice was commanding. Also, take into account that Ra didn't curse.

Without Rakim, Nas would be nowhere near as acclaimed as he is.

lol.. my argument is not that Rakim cant craft great verses. He did. Thats undeniable.

To be honest, I really hate topics like this..lol

I dont wanna be a Rakim basher just to make my points like most of these clowns do.
