yes he was. Wiz had no reliable swingman and had the other 4 of their starting five locked up. Porter was a great all-around player at Georgetown that had an emphasis on scoring, had NBA measurables, had NBA skillset, came in universally as the most NBA ready, plug in and play player in the draft.
These are facts, Porter was easily a top 3 player in the draft and the consensus was that you pick either Oladipo, Noel or Porter first (lol cavs), and Porter actually fit a need for the Wiz so they took him instead of a big since they had Nene and Gortat
I understand why they picked Otto, I'm not slamming the pick. But Noel was right there and the Wiz don't have a big worth a damn that's under 30. Hindsight is 20/20 but a part of me was really saying they should have drafted Noel or Len at #3 to balance out the roster and get a young big prospect which we haven't had.
Wizards also didn't have Gortat they had Emeka Okafor at the time... they traded 2014 1st and Okafor for Gortat in October 2013 when Okafor got hurt working out.
If they had picked Otto and NOT re-signed Webster after that resurgent 2012-13... then I'd understand. But they picked Otto AND kept Webster... with Ariza still on the team. We went from decent depth to a logjam. Otto got hurt in camp anyway but the roster was imbalanced.
The Wizards management of Otto Porter has been straight up incompetent. Wittman refuses to play him just because of one or two mistakes. Does he not realize he is 21 years old and needs minutes? He has shown he can defend, he can hit shots, and he can get to the FT line and he might be our best off ball cutter on the whole team.
Its a classic case of Wittman trying to box him in and Otto comes from playing in that Princeton offense in Georgetown where they motion and cut... and the Wiz offense just doesn't have that.
I think if Leonsis ever gets a clue and brings in a new regime we'll see Wall/Beal/Otto grow finally. Wall is one of those rare players who will look good in any system and he's good now in this disgusting trash of a system right now... imagine him in Atlanta?
