and the cap space is what forced them to move KAT for a okay-at-best fit in Randle. So it was a win-now move that worked out as good as it possibly could've - and now they have that much fewer assets to be exactly where they were going to end up regardless. And they'll likely have to pay to move Gobert at this point too

And given that they’ve been a top 4 team every year since trading for him (and had a solid record), who have they even used those draft picks on?

So really what they are losing is cap space.

Utah's pretty much out of the Gobert trade asset business. They didn't walk away bad out of it (ultimately they got Keyonte George, Walker Kessler, and JJJ).. That's 3 starters for a rebuild to go with their franchise guy. Now they just have to win soon. I think after this draft, they're outta the tank business anyway.

I am all for creative ideas. But this honestly makes it all the more frustrating. Random people on here and Twitter and podcasts easily come up with these great ideas left and right? You telling me the people paid to do this cant? Nope...they dont care. Its not about the best, most fair system that discourages tanking because we had that already and they scrapped it. The problem with this, much like society in general is that the incompetent, lazy, and/or bad faith actors have too much sway.

Ehh. This is doing too much. Make it so you can't pick top 3 X amount of years in a row, flatten the odds so every non-playoff team has the same odds at the top pick and I think you're in a much better place than currently.

They had to add 3-4 player two of which were their own draftees and 2 of their own picks for jjj though? So not really right?

So all in all they got Kessler, George and a fraction of the jjj transaction.

Maybe the transaction was mutually beneficial. People always want there to be a loser in sports transactions

Clayton was used with the Wolves pick. Two of the other picks were dealt to Phoenix for an unprotected first (that they used in the JJJ deal)

And then they lumped it in with the Cavs picks so Memphis essentially gets to pick which team's draft pick they'd rather have in 27/29.

For all intents and purposes, Utah, Cleveland and Minnesota have picks in 2027. The highest pick goes to Memphis. The 2nd highest pick goes to Utah. The worst of it goes to Phoenix.

2029, Utah gets two of the best of their pick, Cleveland and Minnesota. The worst one goes to Charlotte.


so there's a chance whatever pick Utah gets comes from Minnesota, but it could go somewhere else depending on record.
