Rap in '13 is lacking something. I cant pinpoint it.

Everything just sounds like a poor man's version of a movie we have seen before. It may be enjoyable, but then you go back and listen to the original and you're like "not quite." J.Cole saying there has to be new legends should be telling. You usually know when you've heard something legendary absent the hype.

record labels aren't popping like that anymore

underground movements is where to look now breh

This too. But, let's face it...it's more like MAJOR record labels aren't popping like that. In the age of the internet, what's your excuse for not finding new music. Wanting it spoon fed for ya? Wantin someone to do all of the hard work for ya? When you can just do it yourself.

I have my qualms about the state of Rap/Hip-Hop, but I'm also older and can remember a time when if you wanted something different and unique, you had to really work hard to find it. Now, it's accessible at the touch of one's fingertips and people are still complaining.

Nothing's going to change and it's definitely never going to be like it was in the 90s. You're talking about a completely different time period with completely different technology and in a completely different mindset. If anything, I just take time to find new independent and underground music label I like on various websites, but as far as what's "popular" (i.e. what''s presented on mainstream music/media outlets), I honestly could care less about that stuff. I don't listen to the radio, and I don't watch TV, but I do keep my eyes and ears to whats out there through the internet. And from what I decided personally, the quality of what's "mainstream" is so compressed and dumbed down it's not even worth paying attention to.

It's missing consistent presence...the biggest stars all dropped in the summer and it seems like nobody's album has legs. We'll see what Drake make the next single in Nov/December and if Cole can wake up with that also.

As for the state of game period, regional flavor needs to return. Social media has made music and especially urban music fast food.

IMO, dudes like Freddie Gibbs, Schoolboy Q, Smoke DZA, Kendrick Lamar and Currency are as dope as any artist in any era, they just aren't promoted like back in the day.

I have so much music to listen to that I'm not tripping at all. I know where to look for it though.

1. Social media
2. Kids have gotten softer. Look at cyber bullying. In my day if you offed yourself because someone called you a name over the internet, you would be considered weak as fukk. Nowadays it's the norm.
wow man, you're a fukking genius. like seriously..these observations are so fukking smart bruh. You should apply for a nobel peace prize or something. just... wow

2013 has just been a particularly weak year though.. in all music.

Rock music was bangin last year.. hip hop was too.

There hasn't been a single good rap or rock record this year. The strongest releases have been avante garde electro albums (I include Yeezus in this category :russ:)

06 for me was a real, real, really real was low point in regards to hiphop..The two main albums I remember listening to was 40 cal's broken safety and jay's kingdom come :scusthov:...it's no wonder that nas also dropped hhid that year too, which was also a horrible album

07 was great just based off the strength of jay's AG album & UGK's underground kingz album :blessed:
