I beg to differ.. When Wayne was clearly about to supplant Jay as the "best rapper alive".. Jay got on a track with his "heir". BP3 is one of the most egregious examples of Jay latching onto up and coming artists... That album featured Drake Cudi and Cole (the future at the time). Frank Ocean has been all over Jays last 2 projects.

you know why wayne will never be the best rapper alive.. because he himself knows he isnt.. and knows he still has something to prove.. hence another dedication mixtape with him dropping bars about different ways he beats down p*ssy and does lollysloops on his skateboard.. and money.. and blah blah blah...over other peoples beats......i think Jay is a fan of frank.. i think he made FRANK sound the best he has ever sounded on that Oceans shyt..

I agree 100%.. But the thing that stood out to me about that Krit line is "or".. When he says "or" that indicates that maybe the music hasn't changed , and it might just be his growth.

I was speaking on Pre-Carter 3 Wayne.Dudes buzz was off the charts before that album dropped and he subsequently sold a millie 1st week.

Channel Orange was one of the best R&B albums Ive heard in years.

when rappers lose that hunger and and money becomes the only motivation...thats when the dumpster juice starts flowing
Look at a cat like DMX , though. Dude still raps and dresses like he did 15 years ago. Same lyrical content.
DMX does not have the same skill he did 12 years ago.. dude is a drunken drug addict who looks like someone that you would see slumped at a bus stop when you see him in public. so why do you keep saying dude still raps.. he dropped 1 mixtape and it was garbage you really think he sounds the same as he did on flesh of my flesh..see this is when i start thinking yall are trolls are just retarded

wayne fell off.

I outgrew Hov cause he either jumps of attempts to create trends.

I been listening to Nas since 95, cause although he does jump trends, he still drops regular everyday shyt that anybody can relate to. You love your wife, dad, mom, daughter? You love the lil places you grew up at? You watching this 50 year old try to fukk 19 year olds at the club? Then Nas got a song for you. On top of the storytelling tracks that take you out of the so called Bi-Centennial nikka rap narrative that Nas can lapse into. And he's been doing it for years. Since It was Written. Nas became GOAT and Hov dropped to like top 20 when I matured. exactly at that point.

People were saying X was done in 05/06 when he dropped "lord gimmie a sign" and hopped on that "touch it" remix.

Listeners do not mature, they become musically institutionalized(think a prisoner doing 45yrs hard time and he gets free), and scared of change.

Jay latches on to anything hot. Kinda like Madonna. I guess that's how you gotta do it if you want to have longevity.

I always hear lines like " I remember leaving school and going to pick up GRODT..We played that album all summer.."
I agree with the premise of the thread, but I think the Jay-Z latching onto whatever's hot is something his detractors come up with. There's nothing wrong with using different sounds and switching up your flow and what not. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but that's why he always draws interest. I say this as someone who didn't like the guy until the TBA. But I do think that there is definitely something to the "feeling" being gone. I said this a month back when LegendNas asked me why I wasn't as much of a Nas stan as I used to be. A lot of what I said had to do with where I was in life, and what I wanted to hear and what I needed to hear. That's why I always try to rate albums objectively based on what they're trying to get across as opposed to how I personally feel about them. I'm well aware that my perspective skews how I'd rate something or feel about it. Sometimes it might even be comparing someone to what they used to be as opposed to what they're trying to get across.

I'm not taking anything away from Jay.. Ive never really been a fan because "If It dont touch my soul ,then I cant listen to it".. I say he latches on because of songs like this that just sound forced to me. But that's just my opinion.

But music is definitely an experience or it should be at least. And Like you said , where you are in life will factor heavily in how you interpret music.

As far as "touch my soul", that's exactly what I mean. To bm, rap is just entertainment now and if that entertainment coincides with some real stuff that I agree with then :salute:, but I don't have to agree with or feel everything to enjoy it or even think that's its great. I'm now more likely to listen to something that is well-crafted and entertaining that is subtle than something that goes in-depth but is a chore to listen to. I realized that at some point last year because there are things I complain about now that I never would've care about in middle school or throughout most of my teenage years. Production, and sometimes even things like flow and mic presence were secondary. I used to even be able to listen to Immortal Technique and he sucks as as an emcee from a technical standpoint. But I guess I'm no longer a "lifer" so to speak. I used to live hip-hop, but not anymore. It doesn't get me through the day anymore from the perspective of directly reflecting to what I see everyday in life or the questions I ask. I remember hearing, "white jesus....POISON" while listening to Stillmatic at 12 years old and I had just been thinking about those things and I was like . My college application essay (one of them) was a flip of a lot of hip-hop lines and concepts.

But it no longer fills a void. I think as far as rappers falling off, sometimes it's just that we've seen this story before. But other times it's unrealistic expectations and some of it is that these rappers aren't quite as good as they used to be (those older albums are often better). But if what they were doing was brand new, we'd be :ohh:
