I'm not taking anything away from Jay.. Ive never really been a fan because "If It dont touch my soul ,then I cant listen to it".. I say he latches on because of songs like this that just sound forced to me. But that's just my opinion.
But music is definitely an experience or it should be at least. And Like you said , where you are in life will factor heavily in how you interpret music.
As far as "touch my soul", that's exactly what I mean. To bm, rap is just entertainment now and if that entertainment coincides with some real stuff that I agree with then

, but I don't have to agree with or feel everything to enjoy it or even think that's its great. I'm now more likely to listen to something that is well-crafted and entertaining that is subtle than something that goes in-depth but is a chore to listen to. I realized that at some point last year because there are things I complain about now that I never would've care about in middle school or throughout most of my teenage years. Production, and sometimes even things like flow and mic presence were secondary. I used to even be able to listen to Immortal Technique and he sucks as as an emcee from a technical standpoint. But I guess I'm no longer a "lifer" so to speak. I used to live hip-hop, but not anymore. It doesn't get me through the day anymore from the perspective of directly reflecting to what I see everyday in life or the questions I ask. I remember hearing, "white jesus....POISON" while listening to Stillmatic at 12 years old and I had just been thinking about those things and I was like

. My college application essay (one of them) was a flip of a lot of hip-hop lines and concepts.
But it no longer fills a void. I think as far as rappers falling off, sometimes it's just that we've seen this story before. But other times it's unrealistic expectations and some of it is that these rappers aren't quite as good as they used to be (those older albums are often better). But if what they were doing was brand new, we'd be :ohh:
