We’re in the days of wielding power. The executive branch hasn’t had this much demonstrateable power in quite some time. I think both FDR and Reagan would go for broke. I don’t have high hopes but Biden can do a lot of good if he tries

Yeah, the executive is much more powerful in some aspects, but not in passing transformational laws that require bipartisanship.

In today’s environment, Tip O’Neill would have blocked most of Reagan’s tax policies. Reagan existed in such a bipartisan era, that he was able to cut top rates from 70% to 28% in six years. Consider what a philosophical change that must have been.

He kept the nation only semi-hating each other and there were no attempted coups, so a solid 10 by todays standards

His presidency changed the national conversation. Bonus points for that but he loses point for not completing them during his term.

Biden about to give him the oop though. :smugbiden:

6/10. All in all he was very presidential and did his thing domestically. But for the fact that he and Kerry helped usher Buhari into the Nigerian presidency will forever be a misstep on his part.

Just my personal opinion, but the POTUS, while important is more so at the behest of the system. For the fact that Trump was in the Oval Office for 4 years without the nation breaking up shows you the real power is more-so in the institutions, systems and frameworks of the US than in one individual leader (at least this far in the US' history).

8/10.

Did he get everything he wanted done? No, but he pulled the country out of a financial crisis, introduced government backed healthcare, maintained a decent approval rating, and had ZERO criminal activity among his cabinet/circle.

For a modern presidency, it was about as clean as it gets.

5/10. He maintained 2 wars, killed thousands with drone strikes, bailed out banks, and auto companies, while letting them off Scott free and screwing over poor people and repeatedly backed the police. The 2008-10 Democratic majority was a disaster.

Uncertain grounds
I compare him to Eisenhower for a few reasons

Got the country on the right track/kept them on the right track

Eisenhower's interstate was big for the country, perhaps bigger than the ACA but would have been equal if universal single payer went through

Made some strides in domestic issues (Eisenhower signed voting rights stuff, obama with gay marriage and other policies that pushed wealth disparities in a better direction). But neither went as far as they could have (Eisenhower was quiet on McCarthy despite opposing and could have went further in desegregation rather than suggesting gradualism there but did send troops to reinforce the law). Obama had a strong mandate entering office but could have been a stronger voice on rhetoric off the back of his historic election rather than playing some footsy with republicans.

Eisenhower got out of Korea quickly and was ok with the Soviets but failed to accomplish his goals with them post Stalin. Ultimately the cold war intensified once he left. He didnt start a new war though. Obama withdrew many troops from the ME but his foreign policy still left a lot to be desired and did not advance progress with North Korea and the progress with Iran is questionable. Both leaders by in large left the country on strong terms with their allies.

Upon leaving, both economies were improved from when they entered office. Eisenhower did not stand in the way of FDR and Truman policies that worked and maintained good approvals as Obama did.

Both were relatively safe and good for the country at the end of the day and were respected leaders. Obama was by far the better orator on a day to day with briefings and such but Eisenhower was discovered to be quite thoughtful behind the scenes and had the best exit address in history.

Both very solid overall.
