People saying this doesn't matter are clueless.
These leagues are selling a product. TV ratings show how many people are buying that product.
NBA isn't selling well--NCAA tournament games outdrew NBA Finals games last year.
America loves watching sports; America loves watching basketball; America doesn't love the NBA.
You got a Play-In Tournament and an In-Season Tournament because of this calculus.
NFL meanwhile could be thinking of starting a developmental league in the spring to cut into the available eyes watching the NBA playoffs--that now might look like a market that is 'settling' for NBA basketball because it's all that's on. These Christmas ratings show that, when it's the NBA's showcase going head to head against football with very little actual playoff implications--so a tit for tat, regular season equivalent--the NFL outdraws it, what, 5 or 6 to 1?
This type of math has a direct impact on what NFL programing you will see cutting int springtime in the near future.
Ratings is literally part of how these networks make money. I hate when people say ratings don’t matter. Like people get let go because they can’t bring in ratings tv shows get cancelled for low ratings. You can’t spend all this money on a product and keep it going if your ratings are horrible.

Soccer gets the highest ratings of any sport around the globe and players dap/shake hands after matches there

Yall just gotta be honest and say yall don't like the NBA instead of making excuses

It's not about "enjoying" both, it's about appreciating the meta game at play, and how it affects the things you enjoy.
You are adopting a "what's good for the goose is good for the gander" philosophy here, just assuming that the NBA "getting" billions is good for the league... but those broadcast contracts are 2 way streets, and the "buyers" here will have a good amount of creative control.
They're essentially buying the right to package and promote "the NBA product", whatever that may be.
If the NFL is drawing 6:1 viewership numbers in the same time slot with the same level of product (regular season, minimal playoff implications), the broadcast platforms buying the NBA rights are going to want to eat into those numbers.
Advertising alone won't get that done--the fundamental nature of the product being sold will be altered in some way.
When you factor in other numbers that show the NCAA mens tournament outdraws the NBA playoffs, you start to see a picture emerging: the American consumer prefers fewer regular season games, and more playoff-level intensity games--ie, single elimination contests.
NBA is going to have to find a way to ratchet up the stakes.

The NBA isn't reducing regular season games or playoff series

So as a fan of sport, if you want less go watch something with less

Nobody is advocating for the NHL/MLB to reduce games to increase intensity

It's okay for the NFL to be far and away the number 1 sport. They play once a week. It does not negatively effect the business model of the other major leagues in America.

All that passive aggressiveness about the NFL at the beginning of the season talking about "the game ain't as exciting as it used to be" :mjlol: :heh:

Like I said in the other thread: 1/3 of the Super Bowl winning teams this century have been 4-6 seeds.

That means all you got to do is make the play-offs and you have a legit chance to win the Super Bowl.

That means a single stupid decision in week 4 that costs you the W, may make you miss the play-offs and end your Super Bowl chances.

NFL play-offs start week 1 and every single down is critical. So much was on the line last night, like it is every night for the NFL.

Meanwhile you literally had Luka and Kyrie basically openly tank to miss the play-offs last year because they knew it was pointless.

Not to mention the optics. An NFL game played in the snow between two weak teams will draw far more interest in a common location like a restaurant than the two best NBA teams going at it.
