The indie boom/nerd rap era mostly doesn't hold up today, but don't paint a broad a broad brush, and discount the whole era. Some of it still holds up to this day such as MF Doom, Scaramanga, Godfather Don, Kool Keith, Natural Elements. I even still like some of Necro's old shyt, although that's def not for everyone.

The problem is if you're into current hip hop, it's a bit jarring to hear some of this shyt if you haven't heard it in a while. I remember a couple of months ago a Cage song randomly came on when I had my shyt on shuffle at the gym, and I had to skip it real quick, like ehhhh I can't vibe to this.

Don't forget tho, the extreme backlash the underground/nerd rap era got ushered in the love the NYC mixtape scene got on the innanetz, especially dipset.

Would generally agree, but would add JMT & Non-Phixions early work to that list. Cold Vein I consider to be a classic as well, however it feels like the longevity of that record gets debated anually, particular on the old forum.

Word. I never got into JMT, vinnie paz is just horrible to me, but admittedly I was more exposed to him during the La Costra Nostra era rather than his earlier shyt, so I might be offbase. Agreed on everything else tho, I loved Cold Vein, and I even liked Vordul's solo album. Lol remember all of the stories of Vordul now being a crackhead?

Again, some of the music was legit good, and stands the test of time even though it has little relevance to the sound of current hip hop. The extremes of nerd rap like Anticon and the rehashed boom bap "rap about rap" corners of underground from the late 90's/early 00's is what makes you go "what was I thinking?" when you hear it now.

From 2000-2003 an epic onslaught of nerdy pretentious elitist white rappers came out of the woodwork and managed to take hip-hop into some of it's worst years ever...

I'm talking about
Sage Francis
Dose One
Anticon
Deep Puddle Dynamics
clouddead
Aesop Rock
MC Paul Barman
Hot Karl

And many others.

I tried listening to their stuff again a couple of weeks ago and just could not do it....

:snoop:
In 2020 I'm fukking with alot of this more than newer rap so I'm actually taking this back. LOL.

I came to the conclusion EL-P and Cannibal Ox and Cage were the highlights of Def Jex in the 00s.

Fantastic Damage is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Anything El-P produced is fire.

don’t forget bout Camu Tao.. but yeah few of Def Jux artists stood out to me

well actually that was his claim to fame brother.... :manny:

he was part of the infamous LO LIFE's crew outta brooklyn which was notorious for boosting Polo gear from the department stores back in my day when i lived in the boro...

but make no mistake ...regardless that he wasn't a cac...he did make NERD RAP.....

which is why you never during his prime ..heard him on HOT 97 primetime with Flex or on the major mixapes at the time..Ron G. ...Capri..Wop

you don't have to be white..to make nerd rap.....

thier were commercial artists whom could be considered nerd rap...like Divine Styler and Craig Mack...

godfather don and kool keith are two examples of that......

i think nerd rap is just a misnomer for cats during the mid 90s whom were "retro" with thier stylings and complex delivery by NOT sticking to subjects about CRACK and GATS.......

I mean it's all good.....i don't mind a nerd rap track..as long as it's GOOD

unfortunatly thier was too much bullshyt out there.....especially on college radio and within the vinyl community
:heh: @ Vic Lo being a nerd rapper.

Man this is the deepest of the underground, these guys hav the least intention of mainstream commerciality of all scenes in hip-hop, that means also they're the hardest to get into, El-P came from this scene, and even Lupe said Aesop Rock was the dopest MC, plenty other dope MC's Open Mike Eagle is incredibe, lay off the haterade, don't express your opinion as fact...
