They're WAY better than the beats now. You're only saying that because time has not been kind to some of the really poppy ones. We've had at least 10 years out of that style to look back on it.

Energy/emotions/color/arrangement > beat > lyrics for me personally.

A lot of beats are really dope, but only a small amount of them really come to life for me. I really have to take in the song as a whole. Listening to only the instrumental is only slightly better than listening to the accapella for me.

Look no further than Group Home's Living Proof album. Or INI Center of Attention
But excellent rhymes can save albums that are considered to have sub par production. Look at Big L's first album or Soul on Ice. Both were panned for the production at the time of their respective releases, but both are considered cult classics due to the rhymes.

The greatest albums have a sound that compliments the rhymes. Look no further than the Infamous

a) because hip hop today is SO shyt that we're going back to older releases that were decent/trash and bigging them up
b) Big L and Ras Kass had FANTASTIC voices. Yes, their rhymes were fantastic too but the point is that the musical aspect of the project (voice) is doing the heavy lifting on their albums (since the beats were mostly trash).

Hip hop is music. And when it comes to music, Beats > voice > rhymes

Lies. Mainstream production is some of the worst it's ever been. The quality of production is at an all time high, the bars just don't match it. GKMC, NWTS, MBDTF, ACID RAP, TPAB P, ASAPS DEBUT, all have amazing production. I listen to Drakes music simply because of production these days.

the problem is that there's no substance anymore. Or very little for that matter. I miss the days of listening to hip hop, and rewinding a bar like " did he really just say that" nowadays I rewind for beat changes, or amazing drops. The quality is just terrible right Now. You got people really trying to tell nikkas that Young Thug, is anywhere above trash. It's sad. When a nikka as garbage as him can get on and you got motherfukkers who know nothing about music, cosigning him it's terrible. Fact is, lyrics are important. And it's a problem with hip hop now. Brain dead, garbage rap has its place in hip hop, but it shouldn't be at the forefront of the genre, it's supposed to be buried and dug up by losers who enjoy it. People don't want to think anymore, if it's not some easy to follow chant, than nikkas don't wanna hear it. nikkas call J.Cole boring for rapping, just rapping His ass off, yet label the young thugs and migos of the world entertaining for their random shouting and adlibs. I'm not in my feelings. But the day you say you only like a few songs from him when he has certified hip hop classics, then that tells me what I need to know about you as a music fan. Why do you think the bars are so trash? It's because the beats themselves are trash and they don't inspire great rhymes or great rhythms.

The beats themselves lack soul and don't inspire dancing. It's drinking stare-at-your-phone while at the club music.
