what's dope about Common is that each phase of his career has its own fanbase, and you can make legit arguments for each phase being his best

there's alcoholic/dope lyricist Common Sense (Can I Borrow a Dollar, Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense)

Erykah Badu/conscious Common (Like Water for Chocolate, Electric Circus)

Good Music Common (Be, Finding Forever, Universal Mind Control)

Dreamer/Believer represents a new phase imo

I haven't even listened to the bolded to be honest. I kind of lost interest in what he was putting out musically after Be.

you're missing out. He works with No ID again. it's less preachy than some of his more recent work but its also way more lyrical and harder than that UMC bullshyt

Date Night was funny. Not because of Common though. That Gap commercial where he had on a hoodie and a shirt and tie like he was goin to Catholic school was corny.

Music-wise I liked Be and everything from Resurrection to LWFC. I don't think I've listened to Can I Borrow A Dollar or Electric Circus.

Hold up, wasn't Common on Scrubs once? I think Heather Graham's character and Elliot(the two whitest people on the show) went to a Common show, which is a great statement on conscious rap.

Can I Borrow a Dollar is raw in the truest sense. you can see the potential for greatness and there's a lot of good ideas and concepts that he experiments with, but he doesn't have it all figured out yet so it ends up being a bit of a mess. Plus he has a weird flow where his voice randomly goes into a high pitch squeak that makes a few of the joints unlistenable. Resurrection is where he really found his voice and persona.

I will say though, Can I Borrow does have the best track to play for someone who swears Common has always been a "conscious" emcee who respects women

:pachaha:

Electric Circus is the only Com album I've never listened to all the way through. One of these days I will

Who's mad? Its comedy, that's all.

I just lost faith after all the b.s. he pulled post One Day It'll All Make Sense.

you're proving my point though. because just about all the fans of "phase one" Common swear everything he's put out after One Day... is terrible lol, while the "phase three" Common stans act like his career never existed before Kanye came around. "Phase two" Common fans are the ones who keep inviting him to forums about the state of black America :pachaha:

I feel like I'm one of the few people who appreciates all the stages of his career

Dude is in my top 20 for sure, and I don't mind older cats like cube, ll, queen, common, and mos dipping to acting, there's more money and it's better than ruining your legacy with half baked music (such as the most recent track from cube). Y'all also need to rep finding forever and like water for chocolate
