you're proving my point though. because just about all the fans of "phase one" Common swear everything he's put out after One Day... is terrible lol, while the "phase three" Common stans act like his career never existed before Kanye came around. "Phase two" Common fans are the ones who keep inviting him to forums about the state of black America :pachaha:

I feel like I'm one of the few people who appreciates all the stages of his career
So true, I got introduced to common in the LWFC days, then had to go back to his older stuff. I guess I appreciate him cuz it was about his music with me, his personal life, beefs, industry/fan expectations and criticisms never were a part of my experience with him, even today. I feel all that outside shyt has ruined a lot of rappers for me.

yeah my experience was similar. first Common song I heard was The Light, but I was young(7th grade) and in my DMX phase so I thought it was some soft bullshyt :russ:Be was the album that made me a fan. And it's what made me go through his entire discography, starting from the beginning.

but I fully admit if I was a fan of his from the beginning stages of his career my outlook on his career would be completely different

if I had to rank everything from best to worst though it would probably be:

Resurrection
Be
One Day It'll All Make Sense
Like Water for Chocolate
Dreamer/Believer
Finding Forever
Can I Borrow a Dollar
UMC
*still haven't heard Electric Circus all the way through*

I don't see how I'm proving your point.

We are talking about 9 albums, not "phases." You are measured by your output.

He's notable, but legacy wise, he is not sniffing top 10. This is what the thread is addressing, switching the subject does not change this fact.

How am I changing the subject? The major shifts in the direction and content of his music is part of his legacy. And whether you're appreciative of the shifts or hate them directly influences your opinion of his career

You hated the direction he went in after One Day..., I thought it was dope and showed artistic growth. That's why he's in my top 10 and why he's not sniffing yours. Not saying one view is right and the other wrong, just saying one's opinion on the artistic shift plays a big role in what they think of Common

There is not much to debate, because he got his just rewards in the annals of rap. He is neither overrated or underrated, but a top 10 list incluing Common would be interesting to see. Especially since the pre-1994 era alone produced 5 or 6 top 10 rappers.

Pre-1994 5-6 top 10 rappers is a stretch, and if we're talking personal lists, esepcially given the demographic that posts here, it's not hard to envision possibly zero dudes who were established pre-1994 being on someone's top 10. shyt, cube is the only cat whose prime was prior to 94 who's in my top 10.

Alright, forget about what he's doing now on some modern day Ice Cube stuff (their careers have mirrored each other at this point now in soooooo many ways). And forget about him doing that Just Wright movie with Queen Latifah.

Did this guy mess with his own legacy just for Hollywood money like Cube? He has classic albums, classic songs, and he was spitting some straight up real sh!t in his songs for real. Just like Cube.

How do you go from this?

Ice Cube diss response...to feelings caught from "I used to love H.E.R."

to this?

I actually like that last one...but I wouldn't lie and say that wasn't some soft adult contemporary R&B soft stuff compare to his previous work.

Do people know that this man was one of the best rappers out at a certain point in time anymore? It's almost like he went from being underrated to...I don't even know. And that's what gets to me.

Naw, he hasn't messed up his legacy. Common has just been blessed and fortunate enough to find new avenues to make some money and double his dollars. He's had a great run of albums from 94' to 00' with Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense and Like Water For Chocolate.

To answer you're question about his transition from 94' to 00' Common to the Common of today, times changed. Almost every artist has a wack album here or there, even the great ones. Sometimes an artist is playing catch up and just trying to cash in and other times it could just an artist trying to experiment and do something different. There many different reasons for a "wack" album. I'm sure he's changed as a person and the times have changed as well. He's got a family to feed and Hip Hop is not the be all and end all of making money. The record executives and CEOS make all the money. Common is a Hip Hop head to the fullest but the man's got to eat which I'm sure is why he's gotten more and more into acting.

People who are Hip Hop fans know his how great he was in his prime. Although it was a good return in some sense after Electric Circus, B.E. and Kanye helped him out in a major way gain some notoriety that he might not have ever gotten had he not sought out Kayne's assistance in the making of B.E. and wanting to make an album closer to Hip Hop again after Electric Circus.

I think Common is a top twenty emcee. He was great in his prime; great lyricist with a great delivery, tight flow, good storytelling, distinct vocals etc. He put out more than enough work (albums, songs, guest features) in that 94' to 00' run to be in the top twenty in my opinion.

Common is in my top 5. The Dreamer The Believer was an EXCELLENT album. Really the only true straight up dud he's ever released was that Universal Wack Control album, other than that he's been very consistent. Plus he's on Hell On Wheels which is a dope show, and smashed Serena Williams and Tarajj P. Henson so Common is good with me...

I Want You is my joint..

Com aint on top of his game but The Dreamer, The Believer is a 4.5/5 at least in my eyes. great followup to that horrendous Universal Mind Control album that had maybe 3 decent songs at the most on it.
