can a heat sink go bad?

I took it out of my desktop and used a blow dryer to clean it out a few days ago

I set the blow dryer to cool, but I tried it out on warm for a few sec just for kicks and the heatsink got extremely hot really quick, burning hot

Is that normal?

was there some reason you did all this?

a heat sink is supposed to get hot. it 'pulls' heat off the cpu, and then disperses into the air with help of the fan(s)

but don't take it out. just clean it out with compressed air. get one of those cans or a real compressor. do not put a blow dryer (or vacuum) anywhere near the inside of your computer

if you took it out, you will have to replace the thermal paste. but don't expect new thermal paste to be much of an improvement (and how would you know if you weren't monitoring your temps before)

which is what I did.

and I'm no PC hardware expert but I kinda thought that since the PC was 10 years old and never once had thermal paste applied to it (since stock) that it was time.

my blow dryer has a cool option which basically blows cool air b

I usually take it to the vents of my 360/PS3 and blow cool air in there every once in a while to get the dust out

does the fact that the CPU is 10 yrs old play a part?

I'm currently on my I-7/GTX680 desktop, doing the same exact task I was doing before and the dual cores aren't going above 32c

the GPU is around 42 tho (is that normal?)

how would i go about lowering the temp on my other desktop?

that's all normal. you could get a better heatsink for the other desktop, but I wouldn't worry about it. shyt's 10 years old, she ain't gonna live forever b
