It doesn't compare, but I reference the Salon as a potential example of a forum within a larger group of forums that someone might not like, or find distasteful, or whatever.

I don't know how reddit operates, how they go about monitoring 6,000 active forums.
But I don't think you condemn a website with thousands of forums on it based on 3 or 4 awful ones.

Why are we looking at 4 banned racist websites as indicative of the website as a whole?
Why aren't people looking at the several thousand websites that ARE NOT racist as indicative of the website as a whole?

How can someone say "Well, they allowed these 4 forums to operate for a while, they're racist" when they can easily say "They allowed these 5,900 non-racist forums to operate...."

It seems to me that people here are just digging in their heels because they need something to be upset about, or something to troll on.

that sub was close to rising to st0rmfr0nt levels of racist recruiting it was at like 20, 000 subs and i'm sure more people browsed but didn't sub there. so i can't criticize a site that was allowing that foolery, i can only look at the positives?

I don't know.
I suspect that a lot of these subreddits are independently monitored by moderators who volunteer their time for the site.
And banning certain subreddits (or removing them from the Front Page) takes place when there's a certain level of uproar.
Negged for staunchly defending racist websites

You can criticize the subreddit. Sure.

But since it seems like reddit operates on a de-centralized model where independent moderators are responsible for their subreddits, it's probably disingenuous to suggest that, like, the CEO of reddit knew of that particular subreddit and formally sanctioned it, you know?

Or maybe they do operate on a sort of "free speech" model. I'm not sure.

I don't know how else to explain to you guys that 1 subreddit doesn't define 6,000.

:yeshrug:

I mean the way you guys are making it seem, it's like all of the sudden r/science, r/worldnews, r/personalfinance, r/eatcheapandhealthy, r/technology, r/nfl, r/futurology don't mean shyt and it's all just racist bullshyt.

Like, you guys have no concept of context whatsoever...

the gov't isn't allowed to silence you. freedom of speech isn't you get to say what you want and regular or private companies can't get rid of you. if you went to your boss and called him a cracker you couldn't say, "it's my freedom of speech and not get fired"

:mjlol:

no shyt reddit wanted to be a community where you could say stuff out of the norm and not have any consequences that's why those subreddits were allowed to exist :what:

except he was going to ban it until people got mad and started criticizing him so he backed down. also despite people saying "freespeech" the new CEO himself who also cofounded the site said he didn't adhere to the free speech on the internet thing. he only banned it until blackladies started to call advertisers and gawkers put out a article on it so he knew about for a while but allowed a st0rmfr0nt recruiting sub to continue. if i had a business that had many branches but one was racist and i'm allowing it should i not be subject to criticism? i'm on reddit and i wouldn't say the whole site is racist but a good grip of the users fall in or around that category but would never admit because they see themselves as "race realists"

It's what you're implying by saying it's a racist website because saying it's a racist website is a blanket statement across 6,000 subreddits.

If you had just said that reddit has some racist subreddits, or some racist commenters....there would be nothing to argue.
Because that is true.

But to call an entire website THAT large racist is a bridge too far.

out of the norm yes but there are conflicting ideas of the freedom of speech thing which is why they have rules and ban subs that have hate/ content that is a bad look for the site. there are boundaries there

:ehh:

Ok, fair enough.
I'm not saying the site is free from criticism, so long as we limit the scope to the problem areas and not to the entire website itself.
