Since I only use Reddit for NBA streams, I completely don't get it. Are users paying for reddit and protesting protesting or hurting the bottom line of reddit or just bytching?

This shyt feels like Twitter, and we might be on the edge of something big regarding online spaces and how they are being transformed from a digital townsquare to the latest cashgrab.
With sites like Reddit and YouTube going public, the shift from prioritizing users accessibility to prioritizing shareholder quarterly value is going to be made apparent with constant nickel and diming of the user base and the supporting mod teams. The same user base and mod teams that gave life to the website over the past 15 years.
This is just r/spez (CEO) and the other C-Suites coming in at the finish line and crowbaring their way into the victory lap, after others laid the foundation for what reddit has become today.
With the way smartphones gained preminince in the zeitgeist as a major communications/information transfer device, Reddit no doubt enjoyed the spoils of war from the third party apps that made the site accessible away from a desktop.
So now that it's time to cash out, they're just pretending they're Columbus, and that Reddit was borne from their business savvy, rather than the unpaid mods and millions of content creators (yes, a post is content) who populated the site with media of all sorts.
Mark my words, it won't stop here. After bossing up, and funneling everybody towards their app, you'll see more and more changes as they c-suites try to squeeze water from a rock to keep up with the constant growth demands from their shareholders.

you can create your own subreddit and mod it.
large and small subreddits go private -> no ads next to content that can't be viewed or users buying reddit gold/awards for each other -> reddit loses revenue.
reddit removing NSFW content from rss feeds and 3rd party clients is gonna mess up a lot of peoples user experience. a significant number of mods used apollo and other 3rd party clients to mod their subreddits because the mobile experience was better than reddits official app.
That’s the thing these mods are making subs ofyou can create your own subreddit and mod it.
Things that are already established and have a following. Like the NBA. Like I said fucc the mods
basically reddit has a trash app, so people use other third party apps to view it through, reddit is now trying to charge the companies that made those apps a crazy amount of money to access reddit. the companies ain’t paying/can’t afford to pay/don’t want to pay that much. users wouldn’t be charged, but the apps they use to browse reddit won’t work if they don’t pay.
so users are mad and locking up all the content they’re generating for the site for free.
How are the mods able to do this? Can't the owner of the site just re-open all those subs?

Would probably be a violation of terms of agreement of using reddit. Even if you are the owner, you have to honor terms of use. Even if you want to change them, you still gotta give timely notice so users who dont like the new terms can have enough time to bush your service.
If they just chose to un-private subs, they would get sued out their ass.
you can make a NBA sub as well.
who would mod all the subs they re-open? they can hire people but mods usually have specialized knowledge for some niche subreddits .
