"During one period, I signed every bad act there was to sign and that didn't sell anything. The artist that saved me from going under was Redman. The next [significant moment] was when I was being tossed out of Sony, I had this little record called "Regulate" by Warren G that ended up selling 4 million albums and gave PolyGram the confidence in Def Jam. "

So Muddy Waters came out before Regulate :ohhh:

Lyor Cohen of 300 Entertainment On Success, Failure and How He "Invented December"

This just means Def Jam got saved multiple times. Nobody is disputing that. On MTV he said Muddy Waters though. Facts

No it doesn't. What are you talking about? He never mentioned LL or Foxy's album on the MTV show. And it's not mentioned in that article either. So again, for like the 15th time in this thread, you're wrong.

Just admit you have no idea what you're talking about, and cut your losses bro.

U said in post #44 (with no proof from his mouth but your memory)Lyor said Redmans Muddy Waters saved Def Jam.

Post #41 shows proof that Lyor said Redman's 1st and Warren Gs 1st album saved Def Jam.

You then ask "why" debate the man who ran the company "?

bul got a point tho.

there were other def jam albums that were going gold at the same time as muddy waters. and of course, you had foxy brown dropping at the same time, and she went plat or double-plat. so how is she not getting credited for keeping the lights on? plus this was all on the heels of ll cool j's mr smith album, which was HUGE.

I think maybe lyor or whoever are getting their timeframes & albums mixed up. maybe they meant an earlier redman album. like the 1st jawn. I don't remember many top-sellers coming from def jam back then. that period after LL peaked and before warren g & onyx.......and I don't even remember there being a def jam logo on the early onyx albums.

either they got their timestamps mixed up or theyre just trying to force props on redman......or trying to take away props from whoever else.

Y'all do also realize that with the money they spent on Foxy and LL albums compared to Redman, that they probably made more money off Redmans because the promotion dollars probably wasn't as high so they made money off his project and not Foxy and LL? Plus there's other splits depending on how their deals are structured. It's not as simple as "This album went Gold" and "This album went platinum" debate.

OOOOOR he ran the label and knows which albums they made the most money off and which ones they didn't. Just a guess. And no one is debating that multiple albums saved the label. But he specifically named Muddy Waters on MTV. Everything isn't a conspiracy.

I already took that into consideration.

with that said, there were other gold albums that came out along with muddy waters that they didn't promote for chit. I'm sure they made more off of those records than the muddy waters album, which they put more of their resources into.

plus i remember this topic coming up numerous times in the past. I vaguely recall one of the earlier redman albums being mentioned. like pre-warren g.

vaguely but still, for what its worth.

or maybe he was just making a mistake - which is what I said initially before I threw in the possibility of lyor throwing shade.

again, theyre the ones doing the books, like you said, so theyre the main ones who know. but it just doesn't sound right, looking at the big picture. people make mistakes on the spot when telling a story. and it doesn't help that lyor is known to be full of chit so I'm not ruling out any shade.

but again, who knows.

I don't know, I don't think he made a mistake. I just think multiple albums saved Def Jam. Muddy Waters just happened to be one of them.

"and Redman’s Whut? Thee Album (credited by Lyor Cohen with saving Def Jam during its “darkest moment” in the 1990s)."

Symbolic Weight & the Def Jam Aesthetic

I don't know if timelines and album titles are getting mixed up by Lyor :yeshrug:
More than like its both. Def Jam was struggling pretty much in different spots all through the 90s.
