NYC just doesn't have those transcendent talents anymore. Just a lot of dikk riders riding the newest wave.
"and Redman’s Whut? Thee Album (credited by Lyor Cohen with saving Def Jam during its “darkest moment” in the 1990s)."
Symbolic Weight & the Def Jam Aesthetic
I don't know if timelines and album titles are getting mixed up by Lyor![]()

I posted the video of Redman saying Lyor said it was Muddy Watersand there it is.
that's what I was saying earlier.
I would rep you, but they seem to be off.
lol @ DEATH squad.![]()
If only Canibus was signed to Def Jam too![]()
I posted the video of Redman saying Lyor said it was Muddy Waters
that wouldn't have helped him at all.
in fact, it would be worse, with him being on the same label as LL.
i'll look for it.
LL was arrogant and everyone knows this. An any other circumstance I would disagree with Canibus going at a OG Legend like LL but I think LL needed to get checked here and though "Ripper Stikes Back" was dope it wasn't better than "2nd Round K.O." and the most memorible line from the beef proclamed Biggie the GOAT and LL even know how powerful that line was because he would name his next album that. As for the record, Legendary, everyone went in. I didn't like the Master P verse because it threw off the lyrical vibe of the record but it's still all love because the record classic reguardless:
I remember an MTV show Lyor said Muddy Waters saved Def Jam. DMX brought that shyt to a whole new level. Nothing like him until 50 came along.
"During one period, I signed every bad act there was to sign and that didn't sell anything. The artist that saved me from going under was Redman. The next [significant moment] was when I was being tossed out of Sony, I had this little record called "Regulate" by Warren G that ended up selling 4 million albums and gave PolyGram the confidence in Def Jam. "
So Muddy Waters came out before Regulate
