My coworker, who has spent months at a time here in Japan, explained how relationships here work a bit differently than in the states. People basically have three types of love....a physical love, an emotional love, and a love for someone you marry/have kids with. In their ancient culture, men would fukk the geishas who would also help them write love poems for their wives. As Christian missionaries infiltrated Japan, so did western styled relationships of monogamous marriages. Even though the Japanese today marry and have a relationship with one partner like westerns, they still have a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude about side chicks and emotional relationships. That also means the women have other partners who fulfill what their husband can't.
