Microsoft should just release a "PC" box. Decent specs for a good price that runs a light version of Windows that allows you to play Xbox games, Steam, etc...

They already have Windows on pretty much every PC, why waste time/money on a "PC Box" if you're not looping folks into the xbox eco-system?

That is what the Xbox basically has always been. The first Xbox's original codename was called direct-X box.
Also Microsoft's stock has gone up like 10 dollars the past week. The outrage over game pass did NOTHING. MS going third party would basically just be because they figured out they can make more money that way. Its not a loss to them in any way as a company.
The only way Microsoft would lock in on the Xbox is if literally anyone was a viable challenger to them when it came to PC operating systems.

Its just years and years of excuses. Why produce hardware if you are last in sales and have a streaming service that you can literally stream from on any smart device? I get that marketing and nostalgia would make hardware an amazing thing for people who collect. But what's the real point if you can cut all that cost and just throw gamepass onto shyt for free and charge people. Its a no brainer if you run the company to not lose money on system sales. Gamepass isnt designed as a second option.
The dangerous ground is ownership and how they manage the library. They could pigeon hole you into rotating games and basically repeating what Sega Channel was but for your library. The hacking and emulation of the service is going to turn into a problem if they go 100% software based.
We all know how business works though, its gonna be some shyt like Xbox Gold hardware, they charge you like 800$ for a crazy system that only a few buy and the rest of the casuals 80% of people just stream gamepass. The cost of production decreases but volume of sales equal out. So they just charge hardcore gamers more to say they own a better version of what everyone else already gets. It will be some dumb shyt like that
