i would see cottonfields all the time in south carolina down in the country where my people are from. oceans of cotton. it was something i never really thought about because i was so young. it made me think for a minute hearing him describe seeing one for the first time. hell i remember when i was real real young one of my older cousins going to pick cotton with some other Black dudes who came and picked him up in a big ass truck. that was their job.

that said, i wouldn't wanna spend a whole lotta time touring plantations and shyt like that, with the exception of those like the one Harriet led the raid on. i'd rather see where great battles were fought. Black units fought with distinction at many places in the Civil War. I'd rather see those.

Same as when I go to Africa. I don't wanna see slave dungeons or no shyt like that. Take me to where battles were fought. T.A. Dodge wrote a volume on Hannibal, and he traveled the grounds where Hannibal fought. That's what I wanna do most of all in terms of traveling. I wanna start in Tunis, then cross over to Spain at the Pillars of Hercules like him and his old man did. Also where Tarik and the Moors crossed nearly a millennia later. Then I'd like to start in Spain and take the same route he did through the Alps into Italy. Traveling through Spain and France I'd also get to see where Caesar campaigned.

We been here on this land for 400yrs but everyone wants to skip over that and reconnect with people who don’t give a fukk about us or our plight.

I’m good. Love my African ancestors but I connect directly to my FBA ancestors on this land.

Currituck county NC
Repton alabama
Boston GA
Norfolk VA
My indigenous family also.
I've never in my entire life heard any black person say we wanted to "skip over" 400 years of our history.

You and the he goofy dumbass who wrote the tweet in the first post are the first people I've ever heard say this divisive nonsense.

What exactly isnt lining up for you? The nikkas from the hood in Oakland….
Nothing like that breh. I never looked into his background or anything. This is also my first time seeing him. I didn't know where he was from. I just know he's a dope director. I wrongly assumed he sounded like a the other Hollywood types. That's what I gathered from the thumbnail.

People in here missing the point. He like many other black Americans had their heads stuck in this lala land that pannies and blanket blacks crafted. Where we get our ethnic and historic authentication from Africa, when all of that can be found here on this soil ,within our own lineage

Glad so many of us are waking up outta of that coma
"pannies"? "blanket blacks"? Why are so-called black people coming up with slurs to use towards other black people? The self-hatred is crazy. What cult you in breh? Wake up

Petty Vandross.. fukk Yall
nikkas working overtime trying to throw smut on this man name
A black American man saying something real is offensive to you why
So let me get this straight
It’s okay for you flag nikkas to throw your sets up and twirl that shyt over your head like Petey Pablo
But black Americans finding something impactful about our heritage and history is divisive
The same history that my people died in the streets for
Got attacked by not only police but dogs/water hoses
And we still fighting alone to this day
shyt is mad funny and sad at the same time
Everybody want to ride our coattails until we say
Nah, we about self and trying to keep us together
It’s time for you nikkas to fight since yall hate us so much
Since your families don’t want you marrying or dating a black American
Since you purposely make it known where you from when shyt get really hectic
You like when black Americans are meek and scared to speak on it just like the crackers yall so call “hate”
This man tapping into his roots and it’s a problem
The saying is true
You’ll never leave this earth as a black man with no smut on your name if you are in the public eye
Mad he will own his film if the world don’t blow up in 25 years
Mad he getting residuals
Mad he is a proud black American man
Mad he didn’t bring native Americans back in his film
Take and take but want a nikka to shut up about heritage
fukkin lames
Don’t @ me, I don’t think highly of anybody on this forum
Especially TLR and never read anything you nut ass nikkas type

He was explaining how he got to the concept of Sinners

- he's a big horror fan
- he had a crazy 24 hours in which; he saw a cotton field for the first time and felt guilty for not doing so earlier, he heard Dolph died, and he delved deeper into Blues genre and its evolution (racist annexations included)

^that's how he partially got to the concept of Sinners

Georgia will do it to ya. Found out years ago I was driving by where my family used to be owned and didn’t know it. In Atlanta.

Listening to Blues at certain times in life will have you flash backing like you were on the fields too

That’s not the type of time he’s on. He was describing how he partially arrived at conceptualizing Sinners - and it involved a crazy 24 hours in which he witnessed a cotton field for the first time. Coogler is a proud black american man, but he has pan-african sensibilities. In this very same interview he lists pan-african authors as some of his research points for the movie. In the movie he makes a direct connection to Africa (this is without mentioning how affectionately he speaks of Africa often)

In this interview he - again - makes the direct connection from Africa to Blues in the deep American South:

People are using out of context excerpts and quotes to project onto him :hubie:
