Man this reminds me of how a lot of my family served in the armed forces. My great grandfather was a WW1 vet. One of my second cousins fought in Vietnam and his body was never found.

I recall growing up hiding my Southern roots because I didn't connect with it as much and thought it was "country" but the older I get and the more history I learn the more pride I have in myself and want to make positive change for my people and loved ones.
