Unstable economy, less emphasis being put on the test by colleges, and education cuts. What do you expect?
I thought the essay has been optional. Might be thinking of the ACT though
Yeah I saw that change will take effect in 2016

It was re-centered in 1995. The average fell below 1000 or 1050 (in reading and math). They made the SAT easier and a lot more people were able to score a perfect 1600 unlike previous generations.
In 2005 a writing section was added after some elite college requested it. Only about 50-100 college even require the writing section, although there are over 2000 4-year colleges.

1994-1995 is the time when Kevin Garnett couldn't score high enough on the SAT and chose to go into the NBA. When the SAT was re-centered and made easier in 1995, the NCAA said that athletes had to score 820 out of 1600, instead of 700, if they wanted to play their freshmen year. Coach John Thompson of Georgetown had a fit and sat out two games. The NCAA changed to a sliding scale that looks at high school grades.
Thought it was mandatory since it is what increased the scale to 2400...interestingIt was re-centered in 1995 because the average had fallen below 1000 or 1050 (in reading and math). They made the SAT easier and a lot more people were able to score a perfect 1600 unlike previous generations.
