Unstable economy, less emphasis being put on the test by colleges, and education cuts. What do you expect?

I thought the essay has been optional. Might be thinking of the ACT though

Yeah I saw that change will take effect in 2016

I blame Google for this. shyt made the skill of research and critical thinking with the simple searching on the Web for answers rather than going to the library.

Didn't they change the SATs in the mid 00s?

They only changed it last year.

They are talking about scores dropping over the last 10 years, comparing 2006 to 2015. The reason that they dropped is because low-achieving students are now told that they should go to college.

The scores only dropped a point or two for most ethnic groups from 2014.

Yup I bombed... It threw me in a slump that I didn't even retest. shyt, I think my life would be so different now had I retested or the tests weren't considered for me getting in or not.... :to:

Eh, it is what it is.

Be glad you weren't like me, I was pretty much in the opposite situation. I had mediocre grades and no extracurriculars in high school, but then I got really high SAT/ACT scores (with no prep or studying) and it led to my counselor asking why I didn't get better grades (and basically telling my parents I was lazy). But basically my scores were high enough that I could've gotten a full ride to college had I bothered to keep a decent GPA. Still paying off student loans to this day. :smh:

It was re-centered in 1995 because the average had fallen below 1000 or 1050 (in reading and math). They made the SAT easier and a lot more people were able to score a perfect 1600 unlike previous generations.

In 2005 a writing section was added after some of the elite colleges requested it. The top score went from 1600 to 2400. Only about 50-100 college even require the writing section, although there are over 2000 4-year colleges.

1994-1995 is the time when Kevin Garnett couldn't score high enough on the SAT and chose to go into the NBA. When the SAT was re-centered and made easier in 1995, the NCAA said that athletes had to score 820 out of 1600, instead of 700, if they wanted to play their freshmen year. Coach John Thompson of Georgetown had a fit and sat out two games. The NCAA changed to a sliding scale that looks at high school grades.

The essay has always been optional on both the ACT and SAT. Only about the top 5% of colleges require the essay. Few colleges are selective enough to bother with it. Most just want to make sure you can read and do some math.

Edit: Correction the essay was mandatory on the SAT,

:jbhmm: Thought it was mandatory since it is what increased the scale to 2400...interesting

:ohhh:

Have to search and see if I can find which elite college pushed for it

The SAT is trying hard to appear less elitist. A couple of years ago they offered a special test date for kids who took their $4000 program. People had a fit and the special test date was cancelled. Now the SAT people always talks about the dollar amount worth of fees they waive so low-income students can take the test.
