Bro my attitude is not negative I'm just not a morning person
Bro, I've been there, done that.
That rage you're feeling... I've felt it.
That questioning of decorum and authority... I've done it.
That promotion/raise you earned but won't get... I've gotten that, too.
You're just very very uncomfortable being on the plantation, as you should be.
Look, as a Black man, especially one of your disposition, you should only have five focuses on a corporate job:
1) Maintain a low profile
- They've already got their eye on you. This is a bad thing. Don't give them a reason to look any harder. Does everybody wear a polo and jeans to work? So do you. Does everyone say good morning to start the day? So do you. Oh, you're in exceptionally great shape? Well, you better wear baggy clothes to downplay that. Is everyone lazy on the job? Be slightly less lazy. That's it. Do not draw any attention to yourself on the job. Get in, get out, survive to the next day. Stack your chips with the aim to dip.
2) Earn and save money with an income earning goal in mind
- Your job is temporary. Do not plan on advancement. You will eventually be terminated against your will at some point. You have to figure out how to make as much money as possible. Making money takes money. If you're Black and working for someone else, chances are you don't have much saved up and you are living off your income. Stash some of your income away with a goal in mind to make more money be it to take IT cert classes, buying equipment to start a small business, investing in a passive income operation, franchising, real estate, etc.
3) Learn AS MUCH about how the operation works.
- Ear hustle your ass off. Learn how the org is set up. Learn how the relationships are formed. Study how the revenue model works. Make personal backups of important information.
4) Network
- If you're in corporate America chances are you have access to people that can help you get to the next level in life. They're pretty easy to spot. You see them and you and think "I wish I had their job/girl/car/apartment/attitude/disposition etc." If you like them, and they're doing better than you then that might be a relationship worth pursuing. They can also often help you find another job when the need arises.
5) Minimize all conflict
- Beef gets you NOWHERE. I know it's tempting to engage in the fvckery but don't do it. If you're a Black man in America you're on enemy territory. If you're a Black man in Corporate America you're in the belly of the beast. You will not win by beefing. If someone is trying to beef with you minimize conflict by staying away from them. If you can't avoid them then learn how to manage them with your behavior with the EXPLICIT GOAL of MINIMIZING CONFLICT between you.
And remember: RENT IS DUE ON THE FIRST!
