Scholarships or Compensation. College Athletes can't do both.

You're going to have tell me what is this point of these sports if they can't make money?

Why does a college need a scholarship women tennis team or a male rowing team?

Why do the teams generating money have to cover the expense of all these other sports instead of just playing the players?
Olympics?

I mean shyt I don't know why sports HAVE to exist. And you don't either.

and many teams barely make any money unless you're D1/D2.

Its not just about money. You know this.

don't get why these players in America need to even go to college in the first place. :gucci:

Just do what we do in Europe and let them just play for teams and get paid, fukk going to college if you're good enough to go pro NOW.
I trend towards this more and more.

However...football would get people FU&KED up if they didn't develop in college :damn:

They could get a scholarship included in compensation. LIke prepaid 4 year pay to stated university covering tuition and books by the team on top of money paid per year.

cause 99% of everyone else is there to fukking get a degree. :stopitslime:

They're ONLY athletes. They're not fukking super-humans.

Dudes treat athletes like goddamn royalty for some reason.

My dude...theres students out here busting ass to make honor roll and you're upset at your time management cause you chose to pursue 4 years of workouts.

you just said a bunch of shyt that still didnt answer the question of why they cant get both....unless you count 'cause 99% of everyone else is there to get a degree' as your reason...which i would call bullshyt and a nice made up stat to make a point...cause a lot of athletes go to school for the degree too; while at the same time a lot of non-athletes are there for other reasons besides a degree...

also, whose treating them like royalty?....whose acting like they super human?....whose saying they are above the non-athletes that go to school?....i sure as hell didnt, and i've never heard those as reasons why they shouldnt be paid while they are in college....

....anyway, is that your final reason why they cant do both?...if so, i'll state my thoughts on it...

Yup. They making shyt WAY more complex than it needs to be.

But I can "see" how certain schools and boosters would act like jackasses and go overboard paying players to use their image and likeness. Still rather that than anything
Yep that shyt is happening already anyway, just shadily under the table violating rules. And the money destroys competitive balance in many ways already within the rules without being funneled directly to the players. Richer schools have better facilities, can pay elite coaches whatever they want, etc. etc. I am not worried about endorsements fukking up competitive balance at all. The main reason why people are opposed to shyt like this is because it angers them that these damn athletes who are blessed with genetics and abilities that they don't have are able to be so successful from it. Like most things in life, it starts with people having a fundamental disdain for other humans and their successes

The NCAA makes a lot of money.

And? Thats because of:

1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Baseball
Also important to note: the NCAA itself makes almost no money off football. The vast majority (about 90%) of the money made by the NCAA is thru it's television rights deal with CBS/Turner for the basketball tournament. NCAA doesn't have shyt to do with football, bowls, BCS, playoff, national championship, none of that shyt.

Aye that's true, would help if there where more levels to professional football in America, or leagues for under 21s, under 18s etc like we have over here for our sports.
I mean its really the only reason US sucks at soccer

We dominate everything else. Its not like we don't have facilities.

Honestly, I feel that people cape for student athletes too much.

I was a so-so athlete in high school, excellent student though. Its a choice you have to make. These are 18 year olds that in any other case we treat as adults who can enter the military, vote, and do all sorts of other things. And some of them want to pursue hours and hours of commitment to playing sports. You can't have it both ways.

Fact remains however, that people treat student athletes like damn near ambassadors. They keep letting these student athletes represent university talking positions and points on social issues and what not as if the other ACTUAL academics on those campuses don't have more to contribute.

THen when we all hear about the "I gotta help my mom out" talk, I get why many people are swayed.

But you help your mom with that degree...or going pro. The whole notion of "well people watch me play in school" means "I should be paid for every eyeball" doesn't make sense to me. Why aren't we paying high school players? I mean its literally the same thing. Its talent development in a structured atmosphere.

And I also think the utility of amateur sports needs to be valued more and held up as an institution.

I think theres reforms to be made in terms of students seeking jobs who are on athletic scholarships for example, but to claim that students deserve salaries...that makes no sense to me.

People who have academic scholarships don't get paid when they bring in more money to the school by way of research efforts, or publicity from their civic works and accomplishments.

Thats the thing.

I'm not jealous, but I have seen student athletes at D3 schools that were also elite academic schools up close and thrive personally and academically. Taking advantage etc.

And SOME student athletes pull it off and manage not to fukk off all their free time and effort. Thats what gets forgotten. Many people who reach that senior year end up doing great things post their athletic time in college. This notion that the free-time of an athlete is commensurate with compensation doesn't reach me.

It never did.
