Would be interesting to see how difficult it would be to get accepted into these state schools if they ever became tuition free. I mean, they'd have to limit entry somehow, and some sort of merit-based approach seems to be the obvious option.

Ha. In the United States, after 5 years, work experience is as valued as the $120k Diploma. Plus, graduating with a degree gets you much further than an entry level job, unless you have shytty social skills.
