He had an elite BBIQ in his later years. He did not have an elite BBiQ with Shaq. Phil called him an uncoachable child. You don’t say that about someone blowing you away with his decision making.

I’m a numbers guy and not a feelings guy. And numbers don’t lie. :yeshrug: “Kobe didn’t have the ball enough to rack up assists” isn’t supported by facts. 36.7% usage, 3.7 assists. Abysmal
I’m not a “feelings” guy either, I’m a reality person.

The reality is Kobe has a 3-peat with Shaq, two more as the 1a and McGrady doesn’t have a title.

There’s zero way to tell if McGrady would’ve been good enough to do that. Could McGrady be an effective Championship-winning 1b or did he have to be the guy? As the side role in Toronto they got swept. A lot of Super Teams don’t win anything. Trailblazers loaded up the season after they got beat by the Lakers, Rockets added Barkley, etc. and they didn’t get close.

Kobe functioned well on a Super Team as a 1b/1a to the Threepeat. That’s a significant stat. McGrady would’ve had to have the same role on a Shaq team but dude wanted to be the man and thought Orlando was going to be the place to win a Championship.

thats was lost in this debate, sure kobe didnt play well in that indiana series other than the pivotal game 4 that could have swung the series the other direction, but they dont even make it to the finals that first year with tracy or vince.

And sorry but Bill Russell was Ben Wallace on a team full of Hall of famers but gets boosted for being the defensive anchor of many championship teams. Question is if it was today how many rings would Ben Wallace have needed for you to put him above Shaq? Bob Cousy was MVP the same season Bill won his first ring. Is that the man? Bron manicured teams to have 2 1A players for 3 out of his 4 rings. His 4th ring, AD was better because he played great on BOTH sides of the ball.

A lot of people evaluate players based on who they like and not on what actually happened.
Bill Russell is the greatest player on one side of the ball. There is no no player that has been as good on offense as Bill Russell was on defense.

In the 60s Defense was more valuable than offense.

Being the greatest defensive player ever, lead to the greatest impact on winning. That why Bill Russell is top 2 along with Jordan.

Just because offense is more important in today's game doesn't mean that was the case in Russell's era

A 6 year vet that never made it out of the first round leading a team to 21 wins can't replace a proven playoff perform and get the same results. 5 years in and leading your team to a 10-41 (games that Wade played)record is nasty no matter how you wanna slice it but at least Wade had already proved he could win by then.

TMac never did yet people want to pretend replacing Kobe with him would give the same results. Meanwhile in TMac's own career he loses in the first round with Yao one season by playoffs next season he's watching Ron Artest/Yao lead the team he couldnt out the 2nd round. You cant replace someone like Kobe with someone that never did it
:yeshrug:
Pau Gasol never won a playoff GAME until he got traded to the Lakers. However, he was their missing piece because the Lakers were not gonna win with Kwame Brown still on the roster. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that players with TMac and Vince’s ability could’ve won with Shaq. Would they have won with Pau Gasol? Probably not.

I didn’t even know Orlando McGrady had a 19 game losing streak.

Man, Shaq needs to be grateful he had Kobe.
