Where is Abia state? When did River State become Igboland, a good majority don't speak Igbo except the neighboring tribes that have mixed dialect.

Ikewerre Igbo live in Rivers. Based on your question, you'd also query my inclusion of Aniocha Delta State Igbos.

Can anyone explain the relationship between a tribe and a "state"?
Friend of mine is igbo and from abia state. his wife is igbo but from another location and there was some tension between the families because igbo from her region don't marry igbo from his based on some ancient stereotypes. I tried to rationalize it as a person from NYC not wanting their kids to marry someone from Maryland...but it still seemed a little extreme to me

States are just regular national subdivisions like Texas or Virginia. But, within those states (and across states too) are different clans. For example in Delta State live the Aniocha Igbo. If someone from there was to marry and Igbo person from Nsukka, there'd be a difference in clan and dialect.
