Africa?Damn all the traveling he’s done in his life and he’s never even visited Africa tho?The point about fighting for Alabama & Mississippi, etc was true but some of this you can tell, there’s likely a resentment for Africa at large. Like I’m sure he’s been all over Europe, Asia, Australia, etc without really batting eye. Just taking in what the world has to offer.

This is the crux of the issue for me.
Its one thing to be of the opinion that we should identify as American/Black American because we are the cornerstone of this society. Because if the European descendants of the Mayflower are referred to simply as American than so should the descendants of the Africans who arrived in Jamestown before them.
But once he said that he’s traveled around the world and has yet to travel to Africa, that lets me know that there is some bias there that has prevented him from doing so. Which means that there is probably some bias in not wanting to be referred to as African.
I can’t get down with that.
For me, identifying simply as American has nothing to do with trying to separate my identity from Africa. I honor my enslaved African ancestors, I respect the land that their from, and I respect my African brothers and sisters. And when it comes down to it, I’m an American of African descent.
But what I want is that when you say the word American, the first image to pop in your mind is that of a black person and not of a white person. We were here before any ethnic whites, we were here even before the English who came on the Mayflower.

Seemed like he has some deep seeded hatred for Africans and self hate. Really strange and ignorant thing to say and be proud of. He is rich, can travel anywhere and has no problem breaking bread with racist europeans and asians but refuses to step foot in Africa.
Resent is also a strong word. You can say you prefer to be called black but to resent something is to be disgusted and insulted. Its clear he thinks africans are inferior to other races which is really why he resents being called African.
Nah, that’s basically what he said. That is a wealthy 80 year old black man that has been all around the world. Except Africa. Why?

Not really. There is absolutely no logical reason a black person as rich, privileged and well traveled as Smokey has has never been anywhere on the continent of Africa unless he deliberately had no desire to go there.
