I don't understand how the "African" part of African American takes away from "American" part of the term. The "African" acknowledges that we are descendants of unknown African tribes/nations. People who were forcibly taken from their lands and had their culture stripped from the moment they arrived America.

the thing is ...seems like this thread...after news has been about banning teaching of real american history in school..pushing the african out of american and replacing it with black means no kids will ever ask the question "how am I african and an american?"

Again, that’s not the matter of contention. They don’t have the continent of their origin pre-fixed to being American. No one white is ever referred to as the default “European” American. This psychologically implies it’s their country.

Now maybe 2nd, 3rd generation whites may call themselves French/German/Italian American when it’s convenient but never “European American”.

The fact someone can come from Poland 50 years ago, have children and just be referred to as an American is the problem. A Jamaican can immigrate to America and yet they’ll be referred to African American first before their heritage.

How can a people that have been on this land for centuries, who are so far removed from the continent they were stolen from, identify with it, when we’re more American than the euro trash that sailed over here only a century ago?

The only positive black connotation I know is "in the black" and was quite surprised it is in the financial world vs "in the red". I guess has to do with the ink used.



I would have thought Americans would have appreciated the acknowledgement that your originality is of the home continent and not of America. On the flip side I can see how it can make you feel as not being "one of us" like other Americans. Nowadays I presume the other reason to back out of it is the cross-Atlantic "beef" generated by YouTube and Twitter agitators who are looking to rile up their base supporters to generate more views/retweets and ultimately more $

But the reality is that outside of your great-great grandparent (depending on your age of course), you're lineage is African, quite simply..

In UK we're classed as Black-British or being having Black African heritage.

But based on what we know, black people aren't original to the Americas. If we're going by what's "known" and documented and even the acronym America Descendants of Slaves (ADOS) you are indeed African & American.

I'm not on the ADOS wave but I think African American helps separate who is black and from America versus those who are black and from say Nigeria. By just saying black it puts us all under the same umbrella which is what white people intended when coming up with white and black. Doesn't really matter to me though I use both black and African American. Think the debate is just a distraction anyway. Let's them talk about what we want to be called instead of how we want to be treated.
