You'd have to show me a study of the effects of second-hand smoke from cigarettes affecting pedestrians (it's not like you pass by a smoker that often daily) to show how much life would improve if people stopped smoking outside. You made a counter point that was tangential to the topic at hand. Cell phone usage while driving is responsible for a large number of deaths every year, but we aren’t talking about banning cell phones. There are legislation to punish people who operate vehicles who are distracted or under the influence of drugs or medication.

Getting back to the topic at hand, one search using minamal effort will show you the toxic effects second and third hand smoke has on the environment and the those around you. That’s not fringe science. In New York especially, where you’re in close contact to people who have fumed around them. This is like arguing that we should still use asbestos in buildings.
