I liked him in his early days, but after a while he wore thin, he really is too laid back for half of the people he was on tracks with. His mellow flow is great to ride a beat on, but its gets boring very quickly. It was incredibly hard to get on board when you had Pac dropping bangers every other week, with both a fast and slow flow.

I can understand the appeal though, he rode that pretend pimp train ala Kat Williams. People love that shyt, Pimps, Gangsters, etc. However judging from his Instagram posts, dude has always been playing pretend and or c00ning around.

I disagree. Of course nobody's popularity last long, it's just life. That's why pop artists have a very short shelf life even tho
they mega big.

I just think his approach became different very quickly which threw his fanbase off after the trial, even tho its understandable. He still only had 1 album. On some level your fanbase kinda grows with you. Plus after all that his flow became lazier & he seemed less hungry. Without Dre & the team his production wasnt the same. Also, a key point was Snoop's voice. It was part of his instrument. With age & all that smokin of course it wears out fast.

I get what you mean by the pimp shyt but i dont fully agree. Snoop's a 70's baby. He definitely grew up on "The Mack" and such. Plus he claims his uncle did some pimpin. So all that influenced him & shows in his music. Snoop's always had a deep knowledge & history of throwback black soul/r&b/funk music, which is why it's seen in his music. I do agree that it became corny (to me) when he started to wear it out as a part of his image (ca 2001-2005).

I think Snoop just had the voice, charisma & flow/style. He just wasnt that talented lyrically or as a writer, he would mostly just freestyle rhyme off the dome (which is still very impressive). But i dont know if he can really write a bunch of 16's & hooks. Thats why he uses alot of the same vocabulary in his rhymes cuz its usually fresh off the head. Thats why he needed a D.O.C. etc to help him structure his raps. You can tell most of the songs off Doggystyle was straight freestyle &/or punch-in freestyles. Still very impressive.

Snoop's contributions on The Chronic and Doggystyle are enough for him to be considered an immortal.

Those are two arguable top 10 albums with Snoop all over it. In fact, hard to say The Chronic would as celebrated as it is without Snoop's verses. That's just two albums. Snoop has had a very long career and has sustained a tremendous amount of mainstream appeal despite the climate shifting in this millennium. Add that to the fact that he has a very underrated discography, went through multiple alias and stylistic changes, is a legendary live performer, and is an icon in weed culture.

Yeah, Snoop might be underrated actually. People generally exclude him from all-time lists, like he was just this cool rap figure without the raw talent that other greats possessed. And I call bullshyt on that. Snoop has a definite argument for best flow and charisma ever, and he has largely freestyled a lot of his stuff. Writing hooks is a lot harder than people think too.

Fair enough, some one hit wonders are just that, but plenty of pop artists have had a very long track record. From Madonna to Justin Timberlake, if they pander to their original audience they have tons of lasting power, but yes I will agree that there's plenty of pop artists that had better publicity than longevity.

As far as the pimp angle, everyone knew this guy wasn't pimping girls, and if you didn't you at least can venture a guess that he never had a hand in it. Which is the major point here, he literally vultured that lifestyle and rode it till the wheels fell off. Even Kat Williams had to drop the act. Of course plenty of artists steal from several cultures, that's nothing new, and considering where he came from growing up, its no surprise he wanted to emulate the style, for me however, it was corny.

What Snoop had, was flow....his own flow, he wasn't willing to compromise either, and that's fine, but if that's all you have to offer, its going to wear thin. Is he overrated for everything I just listed? Of course he is, however his laid back voice and attitude allowed for him to sellout appropriately...which is good and bad. The bad is; he's going to feel very overrated to a lot of people. The good being; he's deserving of it.

Classic debut no doubt, but never looked at him as anything close to special as a rapper after that...the 2nd album was trash...the No Limit albums were nothing special and despite being the biggest name on the roster, he was routinely washed on tracks by the likes of fiend, mystikal, mac, etc...honestly haven't bothered to listen to full snoop album since Last Meal...I do agree his main talents as a rapper are his flow and off the top freestyling ability...as somebody said before you can tell which tracks on doggystyle are refined freestyles (the shiznit and g'z and hustlaz are :myman:)...not very lyrical in any technical aspect and has had "help" writing throughout his career for those selectively outraged at that type of stuff

With all that said, probably a top 10 hip hop "personality", if not an actual top 10 rapper...he's iconic in a way that no mainstream historical recount of hip hop will ever be made without him figuring prominently

skill-wise Snoop stays on a solid level, been bumpin the hell out of 'Late Nights' where he just coasted all over it

but his resume could be better, Blue Carpet was dope but he struggles to make full albums. always filler, sometimes tries to please too many regions/types of fans at once. i wish he never signed to No Limit that cost him a chunk of his prime, that wasnt a fit

hes tireless, i mean between the retail shyt, group shyt, the Welcome to the Church/Thats My Work mixtapes, features he has ALOT of material. i love when he works with Soopafly and DPG, never really warmed up to Eastsidaz. i give him alot of credit but sometimes its 'what if' with him too

No one ever said he has an amazing discog. He's still clearly a legend for what he's done.
