born and raised in Brooklyn and never have I walked into a Chinese spot and said

“Can I get mumbo sauce on that?” I don’t know a single soul in this borough who ever walked into a Chinese spot and said that and I grew up eating Chinese food every week.

Hell na you just simply say you want ketchup, hot sauce, bbq and duck sauce.

With that being said when I first saw mumbo sauce I thought that’s what the recipe was and didn’t find it original at all until someone told me it’s not that recipe.

I can’t remember the last time I had Mumbo sauce. I was never a fan and the name mild sauce sounds even more unappetizing.

DC already has a great historical black culture... a sauce for food doesn’t change that.

People always want to act like their area is so much better... each city has a wealth of black history that can be celebrated. No need to act like one is better than the other. Just be happy you don’t have to represent New Jersey or Baltimore...... lol jk.

How did eating Chinese food become a thing for black communities in NYC and DC? Like almost a staple?

Here in Chicago, you had Chinese food every so often. Wasn't like we were having it weekly to where it became part of the culture.

And you for damn sure weren't going to a Chinese restaurant to get fried wings. That shyt don't even sound right.

It’s more than just NyC and DC, it’s the whole North East and mid Atlantic. For NYC I always figured it was because we have a large Chinese population that just spread it’s business. I’m actually more surprised how Chinese take outs exist everywhere in Philly, Baltimore and DC.

Interesting, I feel like outside of New York, those cities don't really have a stronger Chinese community than Chicago. There has always been Chinese restaurants in black neighborhoods here though maybe not at the frequency as it is on the east coast, and possibly because of Chicago's level of historic segregation.

I don't even think Chinese restaurants even offer fried chicken wings like that over here. I've maybe had fried chicken at restaurants in Chinatown, and those restaurants were more pan-Asian/Korean - Koreans are known for their fried chicken, not really the Chinese though.

:mjlol:

The multiple times I've had mumbo sauce I said to myself that the flavor was not remarkable enough to where it would really stand out from Chicago mild sauce.

Lo and behold....

Don't tell me, DC stole Gogo music from South Side high school bands too. :lolbron:

@Sankofa Alwayz explain y'allselves. :mjgrin:

You trying to cause an insurrection.... :dead:

I lived in Northeast DC for a few years and there was this Chinese restaurant on Rhode Island Ave that kept me set w/ fried chicken, crinkly fries and mambo sauce.

Is it "mambo" or "mumbo"?

Now that I think about it I've never had chicken wings from a hood Chinese spot. But I don't think I've ever been to a hood Chinese spot so... :hubie:

Is it "mambo" or "mumbo"?

Yeah it's mambo. The Chicago version is mumbo which I've never had in it's original form.
